21 Random Qs: Getting to Know...David Jaffe (God of War)

We have questions. But they're not necessarily easy questions to answer.

They have answers. But do they want to give them up?

Welcome to "21 Random Qs: Getting to Know..." -- a biweekly series of interviews where the norm ("What's it like working on your game? And just how awesome is your game, by the way?") is out of the question. We have way tougher things to ask.

And just who are "they"? Game developers, executives, professional players, journalists...or just plain nice guys in the industry.

David Jaffe does not fall into the latter category. The game director, designer, and co-president of development studio Eat Sleep Play (you may better know him as the creative mind behind God of War and Twisted Metal) is one outspoken SOB.David_Jaffe

He's not afraid to tell you that you suck -- he's even got the balls to call out the press on stuff he doesn't agree with. We know. We've been on the receiving end back in our EGM days.

Jaffe has nothing new to promote right now (Sony's not letting him talk about his upcoming PS3 projects yet), but that's OK, because "21 Random Qs" was not designed to be a promotional vehicle for anyone. Instead, we want to get to know Jaffe as a normal human being.

Who's his favorite superhero? What's the best prank he's ever pulled? And -- for you God of War fans out there -- has he ever been in a real-life three way?

Let's get to know...David Jaffe.

1. Who's your favorite comic-book superhero?

David Jaffe: Spider-Man.

2. Favorite childhood toy?

Jaffe: Paddington Bear -- and my youngest kid is now sleeping with the same one I used to sleep with.

3. Dream car?

Jaffe: General Lee from The Dukes of Hazzard but with a USA flag on the top.

4. Political lean?

Jaffe: Crazy liberal. There is some libertarian in me *and* a touch of socialism as well. I'm all messed up -- I don't fit in a box. Most parties have something I relate to, with the exception of the Bush era, neo con Republicans. Can't we all just get along? Except for Hannity and Limbaugh. Fuck those guys.

5. One thing you most wish you had invented or created?

Jaffe: Dante's Inferno from EA. Oh wait, I did create that.

6. Favorite sports team?

Jaffe: San Diego Padres.

7. All-time favorite book and author?

Jaffe: A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle...or Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. And I imagine Card, who I read is a devout Mormon, would want to kick the living poo out of Tolle, who is a new age guru...but they are both idols of mine.

8. Favorite magazine you still subscribe to?

Jaffe: Entertainment Weekly. It's like getting a little pop culture convention in the mail every week. Oh, and Mad Magazine.

9. All-time favorite movie?

Jaffe: Raiders of the Lost Ark. It changed my life -- awakened my creative spirit in a huge way.

10. Current favorite TV show?

Jaffe: Real Time With Bill Maher, Brothers and Sisters.

11. Best prank you ever pulled?

Jaffe: I crank called Steven Spielberg at Amblin Entertainment and told his assistant I wanted to pitch a movie about a talking pickle. We were in a Sony conference room, and I did the whole thing on speaker, and we were all dying laughing. Not sure how far up the food chain I got in terms of getting to the man himself, but we had fun.

12. Website you check daily, other than your own?

Jaffe: Neogaf.com.

13. The most interesting thing you've ever named?

Jaffe: Myself. About 10 years ago I decided I hated being called Dave and started asking to be called David. Dave sounds like the fat, jolly, always benign best friend role that used to go to James Belushi (and now goes to someone like Jonas Hill). Got tired of being the friend -- wanted to be the leading man of my own life.

14. Tell us something interesting from your past:

Jaffe: I once called my childhood phone number -- about five years ago -- just to see what would happen. The phone picked up -- no one said hello -- and on the other end I heard two little kids playing and calling each other Philip (my brother's name) and David (me, duh). Did I call the past? I still wonder. And no, you can't take the idea and use it for a movie or book. It's mine! Mine I tell you! Although it does kind of sound like that movie with Dennis Quaid....

15. Favorite all-time videogame? Excluding any you've worked on...

Jaffe: The Mask of the Sun or GoldenEye...or Ico...or Deus Ex. FUCK YOU! It's too hard to decide! I HATE YOU!!!

Ico

16. Favorite all-time gaming platform?

Jaffe: SNES, baby! Zombies Ate My Neighbors? Indiana Jones' Greatest Adventures? A Link to the Fucking Past?!? Totally SNES. Although I have a soft spot in my heart for the PS2 and the Atari 2600 as well....

17. What pieces of media or entertainment did you make your team soak up to research for God of War?

Jaffe: Raiders of the Lost Ark, Edith Hamilton's Mythology, Ray Harryhausen flicks from the '80s and '70s, Flash Gordon soundtrack by Queen.

18. Thing that you hate most about the games industry?

Jaffe: Games are too expensive to make, take too long to make, and are too expensive for the consumer.

19. Developer or studio you really admire?

Jaffe: Hideo Kojima, thatgamecompany, Blizzard, Insomniac Games, Warren Spector. Hell, there are so many.

20. Have you ever been in a three-way in real life?

Jaffe: Yes. It's not what it's cracked up to be. Distracting and hard to focus.

21. Favorite mythological figure?

Jaffe: Old Myths: Pegasus, Perseus, Jason, Zeus. New Myths: Indiana Jones, Spiderman, Hulk.

Jaffe was one of the first game producers that put himself out there. I'm glad to see he's your first interview.

This is like those questionnaires people fill out on Facebook all the time, only not boring, and about interesting people instead of that random person from high school you haven't seen in years.

Loved it, nice job!
Fred Smith , May 08, 2009
Good ol Cliffy B is one awesome dude indeed.
Jess Regalado , May 08, 2009
Although I've not always agreed with Jaffe I have always appreciated his voice in the industry.
Shaun Travis , May 09, 2009
Pretty cool random Q's. I find it kinda hard to believe that Jaffe was in a 3 way. But Im sure there are plenty of chicks up for it. I wonder who they are gonna ask next? I hope it is gonna be Ted Price.
Chase Robinson , May 09, 2009
Q&A; FTW! Let's make this a weekly feature, aye?
Riley Pinkerton , May 09, 2009
Thanks for the feedback, everyone.

This will be a biweekly feature, and next up is Cliff Bleszinski of Unreal/Gears of War fame.
