Army of Two: The 40th Day - Worth buying?!

Well here we are, with the 2nd instalment in the Army of Two series of games. I never played the first so can’t really comment on how this compares or weather it follows the same story line.

So we’re at the main menu and are presented with the following game types, Campaign, versus mode.

Campaign mode. Yes this is the story mode you can choose to play this single player, or online split screen, online with a friend or online in an open lobby. So far I have only been able to play this on my own and in split screen mode as no one seems to be in the online campaign lobbies, which was a bit disappointing, so I for the purpose of this part of the review I will stick to the single player game mode.

When you start a new campaign before you can play you are presented with a cut scene which see’s many buildings blowing up in Tokyo, graphically the cut scenes aren’t a lot to shout about to me they seem very arcadie and remind me of the likes of time crisis!

Any way on to the game, so before you start you can choose which character you play, either Rios and Salem. I played this on the PlayStation3 the controls are a bit fiddly when you start but you can soon get the hang of them, the view in the game is an over the shoulder view which is okay by me, pressing the “R3” stick down switches the shoulder you are looking over, handy if you are stood behind a wall taking cover. Holding “X” down will allow your character to sprint but I don’t recommend this unless you have a Long straight as they will bomb it in the direction you point them and could run in to trouble.

The in game co–op in the single player is okay, and the game offers you ethical choices through out for example weather to kill some one or let them live, which will lead to differences in how the game pans out. I have been playing this game on and off for the last two weeks and it has yet to really grab my attention, that is not to say the game is no good, it’s a very good game, but I keep getting distracted by Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

On to the Versus mode, this is the kind of game play most online shooters offer, death match, domination etc, you don’t get a choice of what kind of versus mode you have.

In the lobby you get to change you weapons packages but these weapon packages are standardised and you can’t change them, you can how ever modify your weapons.

The pace of play is fast, frantic and is very enjoyable, the over the shoulder aspect takes a little bit of getting used to if your used to FPS’s but doesn’t take away from the game. You play most f these games in teams of 4 / 6 / 8 so this kind of takes away from the “TWO” aspect, I would have enjoyed it if it was more teams of two, rather than two teams of many, oh well!

Round up

All in all Army of Two the 40th Day is a good game, enjoyable and playable but in my opinion NOT worth 40 quid, I would wait a while and have a think if there is anything else you want before choosing this.

My rating: 3.5 out of 5

Isn't 40 Quid like $80 US Dollars? That's a lot for this game!
