Bargaining Chips: Games that are (mostly) Free

I don't pay for games. Not when I can help it, and yes, I do play fair. You will rarely see me pay more than $20 for a game. Unless it is Nintendo First party titles that I have to play... They don't drop the MSRP for nobody. But that's why they're the Great Satan. Otherwise, the internet is home to trillions of free games. Here's four you to get just by leaving Bitmob open in another tab.

Crush the Castle

Price: Free

Push the Button, Knock the Castle Down, Bump Bump

The best flash games are the ones that are stripped down to a single bite size mechanic that is fun again and again and again. Taking down nameless medieval kings and their castles with a trebuchet has never been so fun… if it was ever offered before! And don’t forget the free iPhone App. Cherchez la vache! For the initiated, try the remixed mechanics in the Players Pack.

Battlefield Heroes

Price: Free

One of PC gaming’s (and now console) most storied franchise got a comic facelift (or down). Just because it’s free, cartoon inspired, and third person does not make it any less an essential title in the series. Some of the subtlety has been stripped away, making it all the easier to try out. Now those countless hours of learning difficult vehicle controls and exploits can now be used to dress your avatar.

Psychonauts

Price: $9.95/month subscription

Where: Here

Get double pretentious by playing a video game cult classic while adhering to your socialist ethics. Gametap has been offering up the full game for free for as long as the service has been around, THAT IS UNTIL I WANTED TO POST THIS ARTICLE. Jerks. Oh well, put down the $9.95 for the monthly membership, and you'll get hundreds of games, Psychonauts the best of the bunch.  Go play it once and for all so all those blogs can stop complaining about how no one played it. SO ANNOYING.

Fallen Empire: Legions

Price: Free

Where: Here

I was never a Tribes fan, so I had no real motivation to try the spiritual sequel other than it was free. Online multiplayer makes me uncomfortable.   But when I get into a game by myself, I like to jump. And jump. And sing “Somewhere over the Rainbow” as I jetpack all about! Of course, you could actually have fun with honest to goodness Tribes action in your web browser… Some people are hard to please.

Pardon my ignorance and laziness, but what console is Battlefield Heroes on? And very good way to mention Psychonauts in a budget game post!!!

Good suggestions - I'd only go as far as to say that for those who don't want another monthly on their credit card, Psychonauts recently hit GOG DRM-free at $10.

I'd still go gametap, because they have a couple of the Thief games, and that is awesome. You can knock out 3-4 games in a couple weekends, and cancel the sub.

Battle Field heroes is PC, and launches from your browser... I think there's a plugin for Firefox, etc. At least that's how I recall installing it.

You can't go wrong with trebuchets. Well, you can, actually, but you know what I mean.

Actually, didn't things go spectacularly wrong on that show Little People Big World? I think they flicked a midget three football fields or something.

Not quite, but:

Crush the Castle is very awesome. I give the Little People, Big World clip an F minus as the show is still on the air in spite of this accident.

Now I'm playing Crush the Castle when I should be doing work. Thanks a lot, Andrew!

If you ever want to waste any more time, I'm always up for BFH or Fallen Empire
