Best Worst "Accomplishment" of 2009: Fuel's World Record

This category was conceived by Evan Killham, who wrote about Batman: Arkham Asylum's "Most Critically Acclaimed Superhero Game" record.

Fuel, a post-apocalyptic racing game, took Guinness' “largest playable area in a console game” title in May.

Codemasters claimed it spanned 5,560 square miles. How did they measure that? Those aren't actual miles -- you can't whip out a ruler. What if I were to tell you the inhabitants of Oblivion's Cyrodiil are actually 20-foot-tall giants? What looked like a fairly wide world is actually far bigger than you previously thought. Civilization: Revolution had a larger, more abstract, world, too. Flight simulators, space combat sims, I could go on....

Size doesn't matter if your world is empty, though. So for dubious non-accomplishments, Fuel gets my vote for the non-coveted Bitty -- that's what these awards are called, right? [No. -- Ed.]

Nice.

Between the two of us, one might conclude that Guinness World Records don't actually mean anything.

But maybe that's just crazy talk.
