Mobbing it up
Written by Greg Ford

Heya, fellow videogamers! Greg Ford here. You may remember me from such magazines as Electronic Gaming Monthly and sister website 1UP.com. If for some reason you're looking for something more contemporary, you can hear my nasally yet dulcet tones on The Geekbox, Player One Podcast, or Sports Anomaly podcasts weekly...or just check me out here on Bitmob -- repeatedly! I'm here all day/week/month/summer/whatever.

As you can tell from the day-one posts here, we're very excited about this little startup. I can't wait until I can start posting random videogame-related things like this:

Do you see what's going on here? I was on on San Fran's delightful 38 bus line on April 14, 2009, and I saw some dude playing Game Boy. Yeah, that brick ain't no Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Micro, or, hell, even Game Boy Pocket. It's the split-pea-soup-green-screened original. And he's living on the edge -- no Light Boy screen magnifier or rechargeable battery packs here! He's sucking down a handful of AAs. Can't dispute that he got his money's worth from the system, though.

Perhaps appropriately (and what you can't see from this angle) is that he's also playing the most classic of games: Tetris (which I'm sure Bitmob contributor Ryan Scott would claim is the best version -- just ask him). Is it a coincidence that a day or so later I saw multiple stories about the OG Game Boy's 20th B-Day? Who knows? But dollars to donuts, I never would have bet I'd see this on the bus in this age of game systems in your cell phones and watches.

Enough of the tangents. Let's hit a few orders of business. If you have something you want to say to or ask the editors of Bitmob collectively, send us a message at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it for possible inclusion in our weekly Bitmob Mailbag. Likewise, if you have an idea for a topic you'd like us to talk about on Mobcast, our weekly podcast, send a message to the same e-mail addy, but with "Mobcast" in the subject line. Finally, if you have a dying urge to get some advice from the Internet's Seanbaby, again, send a message to that addy with "Seanbaby" in the subject line.

That's it. Now go and enjoy our site or check out the podcast. And please, start contributing and making a name for yourself here. Make us laugh or go "Hmm," and your post just might end up on the front page with us.

Nice find but he is wearing a broncos hat.

That's so weird. My girlfriend the other day was just reminiscing about old Game Boy original games.

Haha. I agree that the Broncos hat is a strike against him! Why did they get rid of Cutler again?
Greg Ford , May 07, 2009
Jon Elway is not coming through that door! YAYAYAYAYA
Cornelson Laut , May 07, 2009
Because Jay Cutler is over sensitive.

I loved my old gameboy. The thing was unbreakable. It dropped it in the toilet and it still worked after I washed it. I dropped it down about a dozen stairs or so. The sound stopped working after that but my dad was always yelling at me to turn it down anyways.

I remember those old gameboy bricks, back in middle school my friend traded me one of those bad boys for an imported strategy guide book for Pokémon Colosseum on n64. Thinking back on those days now I still feel like I probably got the better end of that deal.

Haha. A Guest, I'd agree that you got the better end of the deal there. And Peter, yeah, that worked out pretty well on the stair thing. No sound doesn't matter if you can't use it anyway!

I would have gave him props, but only if he's playing it out of retro-love and not because it's the only system he has. That would just be sad

Hey Greg Food, did you hear about Manny using the roids? Serves him right! (This is coming from a die-hard boston sports fan)
Magical T , May 09, 2009
Hehe. Something I notice though, is that today's culture seems to be 90s throwbacks everywhere else, so why not with the Game Boy?
