5 Things Nintendo Can Do to Improve the Wii Experience
Written by Kenneth Johnson

If you're looking to hear about how Nintendo should try to cater to the Top 5"hardcore" more or release an HD console, this list probably isn't going to please you. By and large I am happy with the overall experience I have with my Wii. The two platforms that I own are my PC and my Nintendo Wii.

I feel that between those two platforms, I experience all the games I really want to play. Between the games released to retail, via WiiWare and the Virtual Console, I have more than enough to play on the platform. However! The Mushroom Kingdom has room for improvement and thus, I present the 5 things I would change to improve the overall Wii experience:

5. Auto-correct Virtual Console games

I love playing the games from my youth. However, in order to play a Virtual Console game the way it was meant to be play, I must go into the system settings change from wide screen to 4:3, change the settings on my TV from wide to "normal" and then load the game. Sometimes, that is a lot of work. I know it only takes about a minute to complete all of changes, and that it is possible to play the games without doing that, but it's still a hassle. Nintendo should allow the games to boot into the correct aspect ratio without the user making a change to a single setting. I don't mind having a border around the game or if it just goes to the black bars on its own. This would make loading into Virtual Console games easier, more enjoyable, and it should be done.

4. Load from the Wii Menu directly from the SD card

When Nintendo finally upgraded the firmware this year for the system to allow access to the SD card slot, buying WiiWare and Virtual Console games became much more practical as we no longer needed to clean out our refrigerators. However, having to move games back and forth from the SD channel to the Wii system channel is frustrating. I propose that Nintendo allows us to create sub channels on the Wii system that load directly from the SD card. It would remove one more menu selection and getting into a game will be faster.

3. Downloadable Demos

Another benefit from opening the SD card slot is the ability to download games. If players could download something, especially for a system like a Wii where a lot of the hesitation may come from the fear of the new controls or how a game plays, it might help build grassroots support for games.

2. Universal Friend Code System

I am not a fan of the friend code system. But, if our system code was our only friend code and every game was tied to it. Fostering an online community around Wii games would be much easier. The Conduit already uses the Wii system friend code as its game friend code. It's possible and Nintendo should mandate it across all games. Online gaming is fun and if I could see which of my friends are online and what game they are playing it might prompt me to pick up games I wouldn't have. But, this is Nintendo and I don't see that happening this generation.

1. Wii to DS/DSi Connectivity

I have a Wii. I have a DSi. I would like to be able to beam my VC games to the DSi so I can take them with me. The PS3 and PSP have this compatibility and I thought that when Nintendo announced the DSi that this would be a natural follow up, I hope it is. A lot of VC games are good games but not something I really want to play while I'm home. I'd much rather play them on the train to and from work and when I'm on the plane. It would add more usability to Virtual Console games and that's always a good thing.

There are a lot of ways the Wii user experience can improve. But, I think these 5 improvements would make the day to day use of the Wii more user friendly for both new gamers and experienced gamers. Breaking down walls is important, Nintendo's stated that, there is still more work to do.

One thing missing from this list is for all of us "old school" gamers. Nintendo should have two sets of programming for each game. I think there's a couple of games that are worth playing on the Wii, but I'll never own one because you have to flail your arms around like an idiot to play them. I miss games like Mario Kart and I wish I could play them but I think the controls are made for people under the age of 12 and over the age of 65. No more skill required.
