When I walked out of the theatre on a hot July night in 1991, all I could think about was how cool Terminator 2 was. I was 13 at that time, about the same age as John Connor in the film, but even at that age I came up with an idea for a great Terminator video game, and to this day it has never been done.
Video Games are not a form of entertainment, but a medium by which information and entertainment can be delivered. And like all other mediums throughout time, the Video Game medium will be attacked only because it is new, and it exists.
In November of 2008 my second Xbox 360 died. I tried getting it repaired at the local computer store, but it turned out it would cost my the price of an Arcade just to fix it. So I said goodbye to my 360 and took comfort in the fact that I had a PS3.
Last night, at about 11pm, while toning my skills as a soldier in TF2, my PS3 died. There was a big thunderstorm, and I was so engrossed in my game I did not notice. One big flash of lightening ended my game and the life of my PS3.
I am going to bring it into the computer store tomorrow, but in the meantime I am now without a console and all I have is my trusty PSP.
I assume that if anyone knows about broken consoles it would be the community of Bitmob, so I put forward this question:
What is the most reliable gaming console ever made?
---by the way that is not a picture of my PS3, but it may as well be :( ----
Spike TV has just recently decided to make a second season of the Deadliest Warrior. This, along with the fact that one of my articles has almost 600 hits, has made me think that perhaps I should do another Deadliest Warrior: Videogame version.
So, my question to the Bitmob community is who do you want to see in the Deadliest Warrior: Videogame version?
Try to pick someone who is not unbeatable, and if you can, pick two warriors who are relatively even matched...
The last week of my life has taught me that writing a good article about video games is not easy. It is a time consuming process that requires more than a little inspiration. So to all writers: I salute you and your skills!
So my article on Bioshock 2 is nowhere near done, but I have not posted anything on Bitmob for a week, so I thought I would share my latest little documentary:
I would also like to wish everyone visiting San Francisco a wonderful time, and I hope everyone has a great meet-up tonite!!!
Videogames are one of my favorite pastimes. I have been playing them for as long as I can remember, and my dream retirement involves lots of time, games, and a nice fat broadband connection. Yet my fear is that my hands will not last that long. By the time I retire my hands will have been playing games for 60 years!!! If I do not have severe arthritis by then I will be surprised.
Microsoft seems to recognize this growing fear of mine, and they are trying to solve it with Project Natal. Finally, finger dexterity will not be required to play a game, and I can plan my retirement without fears of crippled hands!
Now the only thing that will stop me from playing games until my timely death is a loss of limbs. And now this is the big concern of mine. I am staying clear of large machinery, crazy people with swords, and flesh eating viruses.
Thank you Microsoft for ensuring my retirement will be a happy one.
Videogames make me hungry. I don't know why, and I have never read a scientific paper explaining the matter, but after about an hour and a half of being really into a game, I need food. Years ago the easy thing to do would be to pause the game and eat. But today I play online games, and not playing a round could mean the match for my team, so I am forced to eat while I play, or at least while I am respawning. I have come to learn of the good, bad, and ugly of eating while gaming, and I would like to share it with you:
The Good
The best thing to have beside you while playing is any wrapped sandwich, sub, gyro, or burrito. As long as it is made well and not leaky, any of these provide the best protein/fiber per bite ratio. Some of the dangers are leakage, as mentioned before, and the chewing makes you unable to communicate in any multiplayer match, so chew quickly. And beware of beans!
The Bad
One would think that snack foods such as popcorn, chips, or candy would suffice a Gamer's appetite, but these foods have two problems that make them bad food for Gamers. One, they lack any real nutrients or vitamins. Therefore, you will have to eat more and for a longer time period, hampering your gameplay as you go. The second problem with these foods is that you will be hungry again in a half hour, and that's not what a Gamer wants.
The Ugly
Spaghetti. Period. Do not do it no matter how much your buddy says its possible to do. He is an idiot and you know better.
As a final note to this, I have to add that you should not play games for more than an hour without taking a fifteen minute break, and to not play in a darkened room, or if you have heart conditions.
In my effort to get my Fiancee into gaming I have tried every type of game imaginable. I started with the DS and Nintendogs, but her REAL dog, a pug, made her feel guilty about paying attention to a virtual canine. Next came Brain Age and the New Mario game. She LOVED how Mario can grow to take up the entire screen, but she wanted to be that size for the whole game. Brain Age lasted two minutes because it told her she has the mind of an 46 year old and she felt insulted.
So I moved away from the DS and tried getting her into XBLA games. I would download a whole bunch of demos, and then get her to go through them.
I came home the other day and found her sitting in front of the TV with an Xbox controller in hand, and she was playing........
Feedin' Frenzy (imagine me dropping my head in disgust as I write this)
She played the demo so much that I had to unlock the full game. And she played it, beat it, and LOVED it the whole way through. She put 5 hours into a game that could not hold my attention for 30 seconds.
This event has led me to think that just as someone can only be a Beatles person or an Elvis person, so to can one only be a gamer who likes complexity, or a gamer who likes simplicity. To clarify, a gamer who loves complex games can still enjoy simple games, but if given the choice will take complexity over simplicity.
So are you a Complexity Gamer or a Simplicity Gamer?
Now I have to go and download Feedin Frenzy 2 for my Fiancee...
