Why Do Cheaters Cheat?
Written by Christopher Walton

At some point, all of us, I'm sure, have run into someone in an online game who we think is cheating.  Maybe they lag at oddly fortuitous moments,  maybe their gun is firing way too quickly, whatever--we're sure something fishy is going on.  While we may not be correct in our assumption all the time, a simple internet search on the subject yields proof that it does happen--after all, people don't set up businesses to produce modded controllers and the like if no one is buying their product.  So, there's no question that cheaters exist--the question is, why do they do it?

Myself (and I most gamers I know) don't derive much satisfaction out of a win if the fight isn't fair.  For example, when me and a friend were temporarily obsessed with Soul Caliber a while back, one or both of us would sometimes fail to notice the handicap feature was active on a character.  When that happened, whatever wins or losses occured during that period were automatically forfeit.  There was no gloating, no bragging, nothing--the fights felt like nothing so much as a waste of time.

So, in light on my complete lack of answers for the question I've posed, I leave it to you, fellow Bitmobbers.  If you've cheated, if you knew someone who cheated, if you simply have some enlightening thoughts on the subject, leave a comment.  Once I have enough probable answers on the subject I'll update this post with your insights.

I think it goes back to when I was a kid and some games and invincibility cheats, there's just a feeling of immortality I had, I was in a little bubble and could explore the world like a god smiting everything and everyone with the best weapons in the game. If I did the same thing now it wouldn't be the same, it just holds no meaning to me anymore. Less and less games have cheat codes these days, mainly because games aren't as hard as they used to be and don't need them. Because of this an entire generation of 12 year olds grew up without that feeling, and now with online cheating, they're getting that same feeling for the first time, except against real people and are getting real reactions. This just feeds the feeling of superiority even more and stems from their fear of losing and sense of superiority at being great. Those are my thoughts anyway, I could be wrong.

Cheating is such a loose term.
I play TF2 on the PS3 a lot, and the cheating done there is mainly taking advantage of glitches, such as getting outside the game map. A simple update would take care of those issues..Right Valve and EA?

Some people think camping in Halo is cheating. And I will tell you that whenever I have the sniper rifle and energy sword I camp like the Swiss Family Robinson!

My father wants desperately to be better at games. he finds loopholes in everything and ends up doing down the cheating road. I think it is his fear of failing and of challenge that makes him cheat. I don't get why he plays games in the first place.

Then there are the people that cheat just because they know they are pissing so many people off. So I ignore instead of fueling their fire. Damn my pacifism.

I think people cheat in online games for the sole purpose of raising my blood pressure. They get together with the racists, the screamers, and the team killers and just try to make me have a stroke. I can't think of any other reason why they'd do such a thing.
