I just got through playing Tetris DS for the first time in a year. While going through the motions of stacking blocks in the most efficient way, I didn't think so much as reacted but it was crazy how nostalgic the game had become to me. I've been playing the game Tetris in some incarnation or another for as long as I've been playing video games (it was a big deal in the late Eighties) but in particular, Tetris DS was a big part of my life just a couple of years ago.

My girlfriend at the time and I use to play each other constantly. We would go to parks, just sit in the car, in each others' living rooms when our parents weren't home, anywhere, anytime, you name it, we would bust out our Nintendo DSs and get a game in. One quick game usually turned into the best of 3. I would get ahead by a couple of games, then she would catch up. Soon enough the score would be 19 to 20 and I'd pause to wonder where the last hour had just gone.

I always picked Balloon Man and she usually picked Yoshi which highlights another layer of nostalgia thrown into the mix. The fact that this version of Tetris is based on Nintendo's past games and franchises means you get that warm fuzzy feeling of youth while playing for multiple reasons.

Happy times with a past partner and happy times from when I was a kid, 2 good feelings, all in one game.

We also use to play after fights; call it makeup gaming.

After we broke up I sort of stopped playing. I lost my main competitor and my motivation to play. It brought up too many memories.

Playing it today was like booting up a short period time machine that absorbed my senses.

I managed to finish the 20 level marathon game and the credits ran. Time to turn the DS off and be sent back to the present.

I'm not sure if I want to play it again any time soon. I think my Flux Capacitor is working a little too well.

Who are the hardcore gamers? It seems like the question few people are asking these days. It's assumed that they exist, as they would stand in contrast to the alleged emerging casual gamer crowd but who makes up this group?
