21 Random Qs: Getting to Know...the BioWare Doctors (Mass Effect 2, Dragon Age)

Maybe it pisses them off, but we always lump Ray Muzyka (above, left) and Greg Zeschuk together as a pair. They're both co-founders of uber-RPG developer BioWare (who's working on the upcoming Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age: Origins). They both help run the new RPG/MMO Group at EA. And heck, they're both former doctors that went to med school together.

So when it came to interviewing BioWare for 21 Random Qs, we couldn't just pick one or the other. That didn't seem fair, and we didn't want to give one of them some sort of complex about being the cooler of the two for appearing on Bitmob first.

Thus, we have a two-for-one interview today...with both BioWare bosses telling us about their favorite this or thats, what they're like outside of gaming, and who'd win in fictional geekfest matchups. Warning: Nerd culture overload, ahead!

1. If everyone in Mass Effect teamed up together to fight everyone in the Star Wars universe, who would win?

Greg Zeschuk: I believe it would be a draw. Shepard's codpiece is made from Cortosis. I think that's self-explanatory.

Ray Muzyka: I think the Geth would be an even match for the Jedi and Sith -- if the Sith and Jedi managed to put aside their differences for a while -- but only because the Geth cheated.

2. In Dragon Age, will you be going for the innocent "girl next door" or the sultry temptress?

Zeschuk: Clearly the sultry temptress -- Viconia was my favorite from the Baldur's Gate series!

Muzyka: Obviously, the "girl next door."

3. Best movie of all time?

Zeschuk: Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Muzyka: Blade Runner or Apocalypse Now -- if I had to pick just one I'd go with Blade Runner.

4. Favorite current TV show?

Zeschuk: Mad Men.

Muzyka: Entourage...it's awesome.

5. Favorite band or singer?

Zeschuk: Radiohead (this month).

Muzyka: If I had to choose just one I'd say Miles Davis. If I was able to answer by genre (and I guess I will!), then I'd say Miles Davis (for jazz, of which I'm a huge fan), New Order (for electronic), U2 (for rock), k-os (for rap), Radiohead (for ‘hard to categorize'). Wow, Greg and I actually have one answer the same, sort of....

Radiohead

6. All-time favorite book and author?

Zeschuk: The Player of Games, Iain M. Banks.

Muzyka: Jack Vance...pretty much anything he wrote.

7. Favorite gaming platform of all time?

Zeschuk: Atari 2600.

Muzyka: PC.

8. Best PC or videogame of all time? Excluding any you've worked on...

Zeschuk: Wasteland.

Muzyka: Wizardry.

9. Website you visit every day?

Zeschuk: www.arseblog.com. No, it's not about bums.

Muzyka: www.sciencedaily.com -- mainly because I've got it set as a homepage at home for some reason I can't quite remember....

10. Developer or studio you really admire?

Zeschuk: Blizzard.

Muzyka: Blizzard.

11. If you could have dinner with any one person in the world, who would it be?

Zeschuk: [Former Arsenal soccer star] Denis Bergkamp.

Muzyka: Miles Davis, if it were possible.

12. Political lean?

Zeschuk: Right economically and left socially.

Muzyka: Left socially and right economically...crap, another answer the same as Greg!

13. Best prank you've ever pulled?

Zeschuk: As a medical intern we used to edit photos of our colleagues' heads onto other images using scissors, glue, and photocopiers (and yes, kids, this was before the days of Photoshop). I did a great job of putting the head of another intern with a big beard onto an image of a pregnant woman with the headline "she's worried where she's going to deliver her baby" and posted it all over the hospital. Good times!

Muzyka: Regrettably, I'm not much of a prankster.

14. Favorite childhood toy?

Zeschuk: A really freaky roly-poly that now that I look at it as an adult is clearly satanic in origin.

Muzyka: A bear named Fuzzy Wuzzy -- or so I recall...I think I was about 4 or so.

15. Favorite comic-book superhero?

Zeschuk: Lobster Johnson.

Muzyka: Wolverine.

Lobster Johnson

16. Favorite non-gaming activity?

Zeschuk: Reading.

Muzyka: I'd say poker, but I guess that's a game...hmm, how about reading about poker while listening to jazz?

17. One thing you most wish you had invented or created?

Zeschuk: Chewing gum.

Muzyka: Playing cards.

18. Tell us one interesting fact about yourself.

Zeschuk: I enjoy indoor rock-climbing, but I'm not very good at it.

Muzyka: I like to play poker, quite a lot.

Poker

19. Medieval times or sci-fi?

Zeschuk: Sci-fi.

Muzyka: Hmm, I don't know -- I know I'd pick fantasy if I got to be a magic-user!

20. Dungeons & Dragons or Star Wars?

Zeschuk: Star Wars.

Muzyka: Tough one, but I've gotta go with Star Wars. However, the pen-and-paper RPG game for Star Wars (which we based the "rules under the hood" of Knights of the Old Republic on) uses the

D20 rules from D&D...so if you've got to have both, I guess that's the way to go!

21. Who makes up your three-person "party" in real-life? (You plus two others....)

Zeschuk: Matt Atwood and Erik Einsiedel, two of BioWare's crack PR team. I need them to cover up all the messes I make -- they are spin-doctors of the highest order.

Muzyka: Sorry, in the Dragon Age universe, parties are teams of four. This interview is over!

Iain M. Banks does in fact kick ass. I'm enjoying these interviews.

I love these interviews, too...if I may say so myself. Fun reading. They didn't answer my question about giving us a 20-word pitch on a new game starring two doctors turned game developers, though. smilies/sad.gif

Great Interview .. Maybe one day these guys could help BitMob out with Swag from either one of these games. As I am so looking forward to Dragon Age: Origins for the PS3.

I still haven't finished Fallout 3 or Mass Effect, so I don't know if my brain can comprehend two more huge RPGs in ME3 and Dragon Age.

Playing poker with Muzyka would be a kick. Does he think about the moral choices involved with bluffing on the river? Is he tempted by the dark side of a pair of bullets? Maybe we should organize some sort of poker charity tournament with folks in gaming someday.

I hope Dragon Age turns out to be as much of a classic as Baldur's Gate did. I still play the series every couple of years -- and every playthrough is different enough to make it worthwhile.

Haha! Way to screw up the last question, Shoe. There goes all future BioWare interviews.

Lobster Johnson is a real thing?

I loved watch Dennis Bergkamp play for the Netherlands in the '94 and '98 World Cups! He was one of my favorite non-American players.
Aaron Thomas , July 16, 2009
The Geth and even match for the Jedi I highly doubt it.
Rich McGrath , July 16, 2009
I loved watching Dennis Bergkamp play for Arsenal. I was in England in '97 and '98, when Arsenal won the FA Cup and the Premiership Cup, and must've gone to a dozen games. Guy was amazing.

Mad Men and Entourage. Two of my faves as well. Sundays are good to the doctors.

I'm extremely late to the party on KOTOR, but my god...is that game awesome or what?

It's like a Star Wars movie before Lucas gets the chance to ruin it with his awful dialogue scripting.
