A New Hope

By Josh Timm in Untagged  on

Checking out Bitmob.com (as I was told to by Ryan Scott on his podcast) was a really good decision. even though I've only been awake for 27 minutes, I still think that this site will be something really cool and different. Just by reading over the past entries and checking out the videos, this looks really cool. I've always wanted something other than the traditional game reviews/news site. Plainly, I only liked 1up because of the podcasts. I had an EGM subscription, and that was, for the most part, all of the game reviews I ever needed. 1up.com was not a necessity. I would only visit it to read a review of a game before I bought it on impulse. 1up was good for saving me some money. The website allowed me to not buy shitty games, something that I was really grateful for. However, I didn't really need or want to visit a game reviews/news website every day. It was still my homepage, though. I didn't even know why. Maybe it was because there was a chance that Sharkey (Sharky? sorry) could write a hilarious new entry about one thing or another. It wasn't what I needed, though. It wasn't even what I wanted.

Nonetheless, I was still a 1up fan because of the amazing podcasts and the amazing people running the site. Their content was always great, the only problem was that I just didn't need it all the time. I was looking for something, anything, different. I wanted to hear about the type of stuff that Geeks and Nerds (yes, they deserve a capital letter) would do in their free time. What movies would they watch? What political party are they affiliated with? I loved gaming culture. I knew that. My favorite episodes of GFW radio were the episodes in which they talked around gaming. The ridiculous stuff that they talked about was in gaming culture (or geek/nerd culture, I would never leave out Demonius X and Yaddle), but it wasn't just analyzing the shit out of a game. Gaming Culture always fascinated me, and that's what I wanted to read/watch/listen. On January 7, 2009, a super not cool thing happened. The reason that I loved gaming was gone. The super-awesome people were gone. It warmed my heart that the formed 1up editors started their own websites and podcasts. Sadly, those website turned out to just be the host website for their podcast. For the most part, the only content that showed up on the site was Geekbox: episode 3, Geekbox: episode 4. I loved the Geekbox podcast,(I still do, in fact, that's the reason why I visited this website) but I would never read something super interesting or funny on the site. Podcasts are great, but I want a website that has a big focus on the community, writes good stuff, and makes their own videos. I wanted to read something interesting.

After listening to Geekbox for 15 episodes, it has paid off. Actually, it pays off every week, but I am really happy that I found the website. Bitmob has already shown me that this is the website that I want to set as "home" for my web browser. The hilarious videos, pictures, and stories (entries, posts, whatever) have me laughing, stroking my beard (well, I don't have a beard, but I think if I did have one I might stroke it), but most of all, they're keeping me here. It's been an hour and 10 minutes that I have been writing this blog while listening to the mobcast and taking quick breaks to check out some more stuff on the site. The most important thing that this site has done was that it kept me enthralled. I am so entertained by everything this site has to offer, I can't even articulate it (then why am I writing this blog? I don't know). This site has some of the most talented people in the world managing it, and you would be a fool not to check out everything the website has to offer. Bitmob isn't just a fad site that people will forget after a short amount of time. It's A New Hope.

Stay tuned, because we've barely got started. Lots more cool stuff planned. We just need some more time and resources.

Thanks for all this great feedback, Josh. We really appreciate it! We know we won't be replacing other great sites like 1UP, IGN, Kotaku, Joystiq, etc...but we hope we have a place alongside them.

Wow, thanks for the kind words, Josh! We're definitely excited about the site and hope you and the rest of the community enjoy it, too. That said, be sure to keep listening to the Geekbox

Thanks for making the site! And you won't have to worry about me listening to the Geekbox. It's my favorite podcast out there. Well, maybe This American Life ties it. Just keep going with all the good stuff. By the way, it was smart of you to have Karen Chu do the site design, I love it!
