A Truly Scary Sight

I’ve got a confession to make: I once dressed as a video game character for Halloween... as an adult. Although there’s a (somewhat deserved) stigma attached with cosplay, I’m not embarrassed to admit to this act, because I’m a nerd and I had a great time dressed as this character. Plus, it was for Halloween, and I don’t really count that as cosplay.

Enough excuses. I will now reveal the one piece of visual evidence from my night dressed as a someone from a video game. I’ll also show you the one special touch that made my costume cooler than the average person dressed like this character.

Oh, you had better believe I’m making you click “read more” to see this picture.

Hint: I’m the one on the left

It’s-a-me, Mario! A few years back, my fiancé and I decided it would be fun to attend my friend's annual Halloween bash as Mario and the Princess. I didn’t want to half-ass the costume, but I’m ultra-lazy so I put Erin in charge of the outfits.

She found the overalls (apparently it’s tough to find cheap, used overalls for dudes), made the cool-looking cartoon-like gold snaps to them, and then made the hat. Well, she made the patch for the hat and then spent quite a bit of time dying the hat red.

Her costume was a bit easier to put together because she was already cute, and princess-like dresses aren't that difficult to find thanks to some terrible choices by prom-going teens back in the '80s.

The coolest part about our costumes was that we each had a Game Boy Advance SP attached. Mine had Super Mario World and hers had Super Mario Bros. 2. People could come up and play the game, and we’d reward their effort with a gold chocolate coin. It was a lot of fun, and it was also a great way to meet people, though for some reason she had lots of dudes that wanted to play and I didn’t have a ton of chicks waiting for the “Aaron Thomas Mario Experience.”

I like you Aaron, so I'm resisting the urge to make references to or ask questions about what Mario and the Princess did after the party.

We beat the game, of course!
Aaron Thomas , October 29, 2009
Did you take your time, or was it a speed run? smilies/cheesy.gif
Jay Henningsen , October 29, 2009
I got to the end of the level and found out the princess was in another castle.

(I don't even know what that means, but it sounded funny.)
Aaron Thomas , October 29, 2009
That is the funniest, dorkiest and coolest thing I've seen today. Kudos.
Andy Phifer , October 29, 2009
Just don't tell me that you got your brother to help, and it's all good.
Jay Henningsen , October 29, 2009
@Andy - Thanks, I think!

@Jay - Stop making me think of bad multiplayer and co-op jokes!
Aaron Thomas , October 29, 2009
I went as Luigi once (I'm a tall, lanky guy) when I was like 19. My mom and (guy) friend helped me assemble the costume.

Man, just saying that makes me feel sad.
Jon Shults , October 29, 2009
And here I was expecting to see something ridiculous, since you seemed hesitant to admitting to wearing a video game costume. I just hope you didn't take any magic mushrooms before attending the party.

Brian Shirk , October 29, 2009
@Brian- You didn't see anything ridiculous? Maybe the image didn't load for you. That's totally goofier than I look on an everyday basis by at least 10%!
Aaron Thomas , October 29, 2009
If this was 2005, I think you, me, and both our significant others had the exact same Halloween down to the gold coins.

Hehe, you're amassing quite a collection of blackmail-ready pictures here on Bitmob, Aaron!

p.s. Props to Erin on the quality of those outfits.

The dorkiest videogame costume I ever did was in college, when I put on a jean vest/white t-shirt/bandanna combo, combed talcum powder into my hair, and went as Locke from FFVI. I also got a couple of Halloweens out of a yellow Pac-Man t-shirt/orange long-sleeved undershirt combo (Gabe from Penny Arcade).

However, my favorite costume ever was when I was 19 (I think) and went as Dr. Nick Riviera from the Simpsons. I somehow managed to get a hold of a white lab coat, purple shirt, pink tie, and green pants, and even grew a goatee. On Halloween night my friends and I went out to a movie, and after we entered the theater, right before we sat down, I yelled out "Hi, everybody!" in my best Dr. Nick voice.

To my delight, half the crowd turned around and went "Hi, Dr. Nick!" back at me. Best Halloween ever.

I saw the title and was going to say "So long as Mario is exempt", but ehh.

I did that in '08 myself...

My princess WAS in another castle that night though....

Nice pics Travis and Ed!

I've never dressed up as a game character for Halloween. I have, however, appeared as Jewbacca, Chewbacca's nebbish cousin. Image is here: http://bitmob.com/index.php/mo...ilson.html

Do I spy Sour Patch Kids in your Mario work bib?
James DeRosa , October 29, 2009
Sweet pictures. I love cosplay, Halloween or not.
Erik Jordan Sugay , October 29, 2009
I got you suckas beat. I think it was somewhere around 1989-1993 when my parents let me dress up as Mario. Because he's been my favorite vg character since I was 3. If someone begs just the right way I might be inclined to convince my mother to find, scan and send the photo to me.
Tom Heistuman , October 29, 2009
@James - I do believe you are right. I wish I had some Sour Patch Kids right now. smilies/sad.gif

@Tom - If you don't share your picture then you just aren't cool like Travis, Ed, and I - it's that simple.
Aaron Thomas , October 29, 2009
Holy --!!
Dan Hsu , October 29, 2009
@Aaron Peer pressure to fit in with the cool kids, eh? I see the angle you're using and it worked. My dad emailed me the picture (stamped 1991, so I was totally right on the time frame) so all I have to do is get home and crop out all the white space. It's not as epic as I remember but I WAS 8 years old and it was the first time I was allowed to dress up. I'll post it tomorrow afternoon here.
Tom Heistuman , October 29, 2009
@Tom - That's the spirit!
Aaron Thomas , October 30, 2009
@Tom I was Mario when I was 9 too Best costume of all time: I won first place in the contest I was in, AND the Military Police on the bse I lived did the Mario 3 commercial's "MARIO! MARIO! MARIO" out the squad car. Best halloween evar.
Ed Tremblay , October 30, 2009
@Tom - Where are the pics?!
Aaron Thomas , November 03, 2009
@Aaron Aaaaahhhh! My parents sent the whole scan so it's just a smidge over the size that photobucket allows. When I get to my hotel this evening I'll see if they have a computer lobby so I can edit and post. My girlfriend dressed as her character from Fable 2 and I'm gonna try to get that up too. She was very proud of it. How exactly do I go about posting pictures in the comments? Any code I need to know (besides Konami's)?
Tom Heistuman , November 03, 2009
Click the image tab and add the url. Should be a piece of cake.
Aaron Thomas , November 03, 2009
Alright, Aaron, here goes. The first picture is the one I talked about. I had just turned 8 a month earlier and it was the first time I was allowed to dress up for Halloween. The second picture is of my girlfriend, just a few days ago. She spent over three weeks searching for things to make her costume. We talked about it not looking EXACTLY like a Fable costume but we're poor kids and I still think it looks awesome.

Be kind with your words, y'all!
a guest , November 03, 2009
Woah, your brother dressed like Demian, er, I mean a hobo!

Good costumes all around. Thanks for sharing!
Aaron Thomas , November 03, 2009
That's funny. It showed my comment as from a guest. I'm not a guest, dammit! I'm registered and using the shitty hotel lobby internet from their lobby computer! Word to the wise: if you're considering staying at the America's Best Value Inn located in Gilroy and plan on using their internet to play Borderlands, you can forget about it. The service number I called (that was listed from their provider on their desktop!) Is out of service and the staff has no idea how to help. I'm officially pissed.

@Aaron Thank you. Lydia loved her costume and paraded all over town, all day, in it. And I suspect that Demian and my brother have a lot to discuss. Proper bindle-care in this day and age is difficult on the mean streets!
Tom Heistuman , November 03, 2009
Hotel Internet isn't really too great for gaming (as you've found). Why the heck are you in Gilroy? You a big garlic fan?
Aaron Thomas , November 03, 2009
I like garlic on pizza and in my hot dog fixins but that's it. I'm a display installer for flooring so whenever you walk into a Carpet One or S&G; (or any other store that sells hardwood, laminate and vinyl) chances are I was the one who built those racks. I've done every store in the Bay Area, even the super-expensive "we so classy" places in San Francisco, so I've been around your neck of the woods.

I travel a whole lot (I cover from Weed/Eureka to the North down to Bakersfield/Tehachapi/Ridgecrest to the South and the Bay Area to Santa Cruz to the West out to Reno/Sparks/Fallon to the East) and I have to spend the night in a lot of hotels. Gilroy was where I had to spend the night because I was in Watsonville today and had to make a long circuitous trail to Santa Nella and I'm going to Aptos tomorrow but I couldn't go over 12 hours today.

I mostly like an internet connection, however terrible, so that if I earn any achievements while playing they'll be timestamped on my profile. I'm holding off on reaching level 50 in Borderlands tonight just for this reason.

Hope that wasn't too much info :-)
