Best Wii Trend of 2009: Wiivivals

Punch-Out, A Boy and his Blob, ExciteBike... how did it take Nintendo so long to figure this out? You have a gigantic pile of IPs sitting in your basement, so you might as well pump out some remakes, revivals, and re-imaginings!

They would be stupid to not continue this trend in 2010. Star Fox, anyone? Or why not just appease the masses of drooling heathens and make a new Kid Icarus? This is the easiest way to satisfy both of your audiences. Both my wife and I want A Boy and his Blob because we both played it as kids. Wiivivals: bringing families together.

I'd like to see a revival of Bomberman on the Wii. Maybe do a Turtles in Time sort of makeover for the original Ninja Gaiden.

"Wiivivals" -- groan! If that becomes the next buzzword, I'm blaming you, Alex.

I think it's a bit laughable to celebrate Nintendo for reviving titles when that's all they ever do. What was the last original Nintendo IP, Pikmin? Even that doesn't feel like a real Nintendo game, because it's weird RTS like gameplay.

I'd like to see someone lock Miyamoto in a room and not let him out until he writes 10 new game ideas down. That being said, Punch-Out!! was good and I can't wait for SMG2.

I'd say best Wii trend of the year is having mature games on the platform. MadWorld and Silent Hill: Homecoming are far more sexual and violent than any console game I've played before. When you talk about rape, joking about drug abuse, and displaying dozens of ways to decapitate someone, I don't think Nintendo/Wii.

Wiivivals of Star Fox would be awesome ness
Toby Davis , January 02, 2010
Allistair, most people who support the Wii support it because of the lack of those mature games, since it makes it more appealing to adults and families and not keep forcing the stereotype of the violence-crazed teenager.

But anywho, Wii revivals was a great trend that the Wii started, and I am awaiting rebirths of my favorite games, like Pilotwings!
William Figueroa , January 02, 2010
Allistair, also, where have you been this generation? Nintendo has been pumping new IP's like nobody's business, especially Miyamoto. I am not sure what you mean.

They were like that during the Gamecube days though.
William Figueroa , January 02, 2010
Nobody's business? NOBODY'S BUSINESS!? Its my business!

Alright here's the list of new Nintendo IPs(of this generation): LOL, Magical Starsign, Flipnote Studio, Wii Music, Wii Fit, Wii Play, Wii Sports, Disaster: Day of Crisis, Brain Age, Another Code, Endless Ocean, Nintendogs, Meteos, Polarium.

That's a good except for the fact you are talking about 20+ developers that work under Nintendo, and most of the games above aren't actual games but self-improvement software.

I'm not faulting Nintendo for the lack of new IPs, as Sony and Microsoft are electronic juggernauts that can afford to take risks with the games that they develop. Still, I expect more than what's above from Nintendo. Nintendo used to stand for imagination, now it stands for iteration.

As for violent games on the Wii, I think there is more than enough room for mature titles on the Wii without it sullying Nintendo's name brand. No offense, but that's the sort of narrow-minded thinking that has kept developers away from Nintendo ("They'll censor us!") I didn't care with previous Nintendo consoles, but because of the Wii's unique controls it lends itself to interesting, unique gameplay that Silent Hill: Shattered Memories and MadWorld took full advantage of.

@Allistair - I think at this point, I'm just ready to ask Nintendo for as little as possible. Giving us new updates to their old and unused IPs doesn't seem like too much to ask, plus they can still appeal to their new audience with those.

@Brett - I've already trademarked it.
Alex R. Cronk-Young , January 02, 2010
@Cronk-young: Of course, who doesn't want more Nintendo classics even if they play like last year's? I just don't agree when people defend Nintendo like they are still at the top of their game when it comes to new IPs. They don't even bother, which is a bit sad. On one hand, they are able to take bigger risks by attaching a great idea to a familiar franchise (Kirby: Canvas, Metroid Prime), but at the same time I get the feeling they could offer us a new Kirby or Samus if they really tried. The point is that SEGA, call them bold or foolish, tried to their last breath to establish new brands and ideas, even if it laid them to waste.
Allistair Everett , January 02, 2010
Allistair, just because you don't like them doesn't mean you can ignore them and say they don't exist.

Nintendo is as progressive as they have always been, and more progressive than they were during the Gamecube days. I'm not sure how much more you want from them considering what they are (a videogame company).

At least they are original and not mass producing clones just because the genre is popular.
William Figueroa , January 03, 2010
Oh man, how awesome could a Kirby Wii game be? Kirby and Star Fox, that's all I want Nintendo.
Alex R. Cronk-Young , January 03, 2010
@Cronk-Young: The Super Smash Bros. Brawl team is working on a Kirby game right now.
Allistair Everett , January 03, 2010
Game Arts? A Kirby game? What happened to HAL Studios?
William Figueroa , January 03, 2010
@Allistair - Really? Hopefully it turns out awesome.
Alex R. Cronk-Young , January 03, 2010
@William: HAL Studios is working on Kirby. They also worked on Smash Bros. along with other Nintendo developers, the biggest of which is Game Arts. I'm pretty sure the director of Smash Bros. is the same person who created Kirby.

I've never been a Kirby fan. They always felt like Mario for tweens or something. Way too easy. I loved Canvas Curse, however.

Star Fox seems like such a great fit for the Wii that I am a bit mystified why it is taking so long.

just don't put any land based missions in it and have aiming with the Wii Remote and steering with the nunchuck.

Star Fox has always been one of my favorite Nintendo series, even though I can't say I am great at the games. I never understand why Nintendo has trouble making good Star Fox games.

I am hopeful for Sin and Punishment 2 to fill my need for a new Star Fox for a bit, but the first one was really, really hard... so I will probably suck at 2 as well.
Frank Anderson , January 03, 2010
Star Fox and Kirby would be excellent Wiivivals. I also wouldn't mind seeing a Kid Icarus game even though I didn't really play the original.
Brian Shirk , January 04, 2010
Star Fox would be awesome, but that would be more a sequel than a Wiivival. Seeing an online version of Assault's multiplayer would make it GOTY.
