Best Worst Attempt at Erotica of 2009: Dragon Age: Origins

Many games throughout the year could be accused of being sexually immature, and many of them deserve it. What makes Dragon Age: Origins' sex scenes stand above most everything else, though, is their earnestness. Origins treats the relationships between characters with a degree of maturity that's surprising for our industry, so when I'm suddenly "treated" to stiff animations of virtual characters having sex with their unmentionables on, it not only robs the entire sequence of any emotional power, it also does a disservice to the rest of the storyline with that character; the culmination of my relationship with this person is an awful -- albeit hilarious -- display of puppet sex? No thanks.

I agree. With all of the emotional investment the player puts into each character (if the player is interested in the overall storyline and characters, and not just the gameplay, in the first place), it is quite a letdown when these relationships blossom into things that are very much emotionally charged and are only treated as misadventures and things that are not anywhere close to the emotionality of the conversations that lead up to the sequences. It seems that everything the player has gone through to achieve these scenes of culmination has been for not.

God yes. Why is Bioware so intent on putting this stuff in their games? It always comes off as out of place and awkward.

@Mike
That's probably the entire point, actually. It'll always seem out of place on some level until developers start pushing it. Then one day the popular mindset will switch, such things won't automatically be seen as the imminent arrival of armageddon, and attemps will begin to better realize the concept.

Maybe they're shooting for the "MY KID SAW SEX" publicity. Remember how heated the intarwebs got when they found out there was semi-homosexual-technically-has-no-name softcore in Mass Effect? Even bad publicity's good publicity.

They just need an updated animation engine to make the stuff not look idiotic. Their still running off of mass effect 1's animation system in Dragon age. Here's hoping mass effect 2 has better booty calls.

Every other game developer leaves a black screen, but Bioware just really needs to show it off with such awkward animations.

Hope Heavy Rain isn't as awkward.
