Best Worst Hybrid Game of 2009

RotA

Many successful games take elements from other games to sculpt a hybrid game that fits comfortably in no existing genre.

Early in 2009, Codemasters released the stinker Rise of the Argonauts.

This game attempted to marry the action of God of War, with the RPG and dialog trees of Mass Effect. What resulted was not nearly as cool as this games aspirations.

RotA featured some of the worst environments, animations, scripting, dialog and acting that I have ever seen in a game. From empty environments to brain dead enemies, it played like a poor man’s Baldur’s Gate minus anything interesting. Beyond a good idea, I truly can't think of a single element that was successful.

I was hoping this was going to be a good game and it failed me

Me too Toby. I am a huge fan of hack n slash games, but this strange brew didn't have the interesting dungeons of that genre, or the good combo system of the GoW off-shoot of the genre.

Take that, and then add in painful dialog and you get a game that is pretty unplayable.

Thank god Dragon Age came out... which is a pretty similar idea. Maybe even I will beat DA one day so I can actually review it for this site.

LOL Frank as I still have yet to touch DA:O , but I have tried the flash game and thought it was kinda cool

Toby- You gotta try it if you were hopeful for RotA! There are moments where the pacing sucks, but DA:O is still one of my top titles of 2009!
