"Fair enough. I'll back off. I'm just very very sensitive when I perceive people are espousing the idea of an impenetrable wall between amateurs and pros. And when I saw people in the comments relaying that message, I got upset. I care deeply about expanding the field of writers in this business, and helping new writers get a fair crack.

I was heartbroken by the original article. "

"My comments are replies to your comments. So of course they focus on what you said...in those comments. And I have read the piece. And I supported you at first in "the club." I apologize if I get upset when you say there is no craft to games writing, but that's completely insulting."

"I have my experience and the experience of most of the freelance writers in the business. This isn't a "your experience vs mine." I do this all day every day. I'm telling you there are a dozen outlets who will pay hundreds of dollars for good original work. "

"But why are you working staff if all they're making you do is the stuff you hate? Why not spend your time pitching. It's a heck of a lot more profitable."

"Sorry, but this is more nonsense. You're complaining that the work required to break into the industry is all grunt work, BS-previews and news. But you're also saying that this stuff isn't working for you. The logical conclusion is that you should be doing other work.&nbs;"

"There is no club. That's a myth. Games writing is no more cliquish than any other desirable job. I broke into the industry just two years ago because I wrote unique features that were in-demand. They're still in-demand. If you're competing for the workaday pressrelease/review/preview jobs at IGN then good luck. There's no reason for them to even consider you because they can get a friend-of-a-friend for the gig. But if you work hard on good original reporting and features then there's no shortage of places that will pay you money."

"Have you considered that nobody is paying attention to your writing because all the "news" you write is junk marketing or "shockingly-unethical" previews? Create something unique and then maybe someone will pay attention. There's no reason for anyone to read your work if you're just writing the same junk everyone else is."

"Thanks for the reply. I have a follow up. What does this mean for current paid writers at Venture Beat? Will you still have a paid freelancing team? I was due to start pitching news writing for Dean after CES."

"Will users be paid for their articles that are posted on Venture Beat?

It's great to have a closed community writing articles amongst itself, but it gets murkier with Venture Beat's budget and ad capabilities.

If there's no plan to pay, how will Venture Beat and Bitmob repay the users making its content?"

""For someone to attack someones credibility without a shred of proof is downright irresponsible." -- Dan R.

Hmm. Did you even read the part where he openly brags about stealing other people's content?"

"I don't quite understand the ire over Gerard's style. The complaints about him being really loud in the press room are valid (and something I've experienced myself.) but the anger over it all seems a bit overinflated.

I think it distracts from the real issue: his persistent and admitted plagiarism. It's something that quite simply cannot be allowed. It's literally illegal in cases where the content has been stolen from sites that have copyrights on their content, and it's contemptible in every case.

Nothing else really factors into the equation for me. I couldn't care less if he has wrestling matches in the press room; I'll go someplace else. If he wants to give every game high scores then that's between him and his audience.

Where it breaks down for me is that he repeatedly demands that people show him respect, while bragging to their faces about committing the ultimate disrespect and stealing their work."
