Google AdSense and making money on Bitmob

Bitmob logoWhen we asked you for suggestions for our new Writing Tips column, many of you responded that you wanted to know about this Google AdSense “sponsored ad” business we implemented with Bitmob 2.0 (look to the bottom of this very article if you don’t know what I’m talking about). You specifically wanted some guidance on how to set it up and start making money from your posts.

This article is for you guys. The following information will eventually get its own dedicated link below the sponsored ad at the bottom of each post for easy reference, but in the meantime, bookmark this page and leave any further questions you may have about AdSense in the comments.

Good luck!

I can actually make money on Bitmob?

Absolutely. Google operates a nifty free service called AdSense, which allows content producers (i.e., you) to earn money using targeted ads. By linking your GoogleAdSense account to your Bitmob profile, any revenue coming from the AdSense ad at the bottom of each story you post will go directly to you. Score one for Internet capitalism!

If you have a Google AdSense account:

  1. Create an ad that fits Bitmob's template by going to google.com/adsense, clicking on My Ads, then "New Ad Unit."
  2. Name your ad “Bitmob,” choose 300x250 as the size, and select “Image/rich media ads only” as the type. Leave all other parameters as is.
  3. Click "Save and get code." Close the ad code window that pops up -- you won’t need it.
  4. Now find the Slot ID for this ad. It’s the 10-digit number to the right of your newly created ad on the main My Ads page. You'll also need your AdSense ID, which follows "Publisher ID" in the top right corner of every page.
  5. Head over to bitmob.com/profile and click the "Edit" button next to "[Your Name] Sponsor." Input your AdSense ID and Slot ID numbers.
  6. Start posting stories on Bitmob! Information on when and how you’ll be paid by Google appears on your AdSense home page.

If you don't have a Google AdSense account:

What are you waiting for? Head over to google.com/adsense now and sign up. (Note: If you don't have a personal website, use "bitmob.com" for the Website URL field.) Then follow the instructions above.

Important: Don't abuse the system!

Once you've set up your account with AdSense and Bitmob, don't abuse the system. Don't use bots to net you extra clicks. Don't ask your friends to click for you. Don't clickity-click on your own ad until you've earned a princely sum. Google will sniff you out and ban you faster than you can say, "Hey, where'd my money go?"

Hmm...nope, still get the "website url is invalid" pop-up when i enter the adsense id and slot idea on my bitmob profile.

I don't know what's wrong. I've had an AdSense account for a while now and followed all the instructions to the letter.

Chase, are you including the "pub-" part of your Publisher ID? You should.

@Brett yup, tried it both ways with similar results. I don't think my problem is typical though, because the very first time I tried to do it (when Bitmob 2.0 launched,) it kind of worked, but just showed a blank box. It still does (you can see it if you go to any of my stories.)

There's data there (in fact, there's data already filled out when I try to change the IDs. The AdSense ID is already there, and correct,) but it won't let me fill in a new Slot ID.

Maybe if the ad stuff on my profile was reset somehow (back to the "this space is reserved for you" panel,) it would work.

No idea, just spitballin' here.

Woops. I think I've missed about two months worth of potential revenue since they changed these numbers around on me. I distinctly remember seeing my personal ad before but then it disappeared.

edit: Actually, I'm having trouble getting it to work too and my adsense used to work before when 2.0 launched too I believe.

Very weird. As you guys can see, it's working for me. Have either of you tried to create a new ad? Maybe it has to do with the old code AdSense used vs. the new code.

Chase: What do you mean by it won't let you fill in a new Slot ID? There's a number there already, and it won't let you change it?

Just viewed the source for your page and mine -- seems the difference is that you've got a # symbol in front of your Slot ID number -- that's causing the problem. Can you input it without the #?

@Brett yes, and it still gives me the same message with or without the "#" in front. I don't know what got screwed up the first time, but it's not letting me correct it.

It's not really that big of a deal, but if it can be fixed, it'd be nice.

So, all that legal stuff in the agreement of conditions is nothing to worry about if you don't abuse the system?

This is a really cool feature. I haven't been using Bitmob much recently, but plan to start again!

^ Ditto...actually me not using bitmob has been a good thing seeing as I've been asked to write for other places every now and again. Plus I've been reading more than I've been writing nowadays.

@Chase: Damn, sorry to hear that. Let's address that again after we've fixed our major tech issues. Heck, it might even fix itself when we deploy that.

@Ryan: Exactly. Play by the rules, and you'll be fine.

I get a similar problem than Chase with

Update Failed

There were problems with the following fields:

  • Website url is invalid
  • Adsense is invalid

Which is strange, since they're both correct when I input them.

@Daav: Looks like you put your Publisher ID into both fields. Your slot ID number should only be 10 digits. Look to the instructions above for where to find that number. Let me know if you still have problems!

Hey Brett, I kind of had to tinker with my AdSense, because I signed up for a Google account long ago, when they didn't have Gmail. So I had two accounts: one with my former Internet service provider and one with gmail. I ended up having to delete my old one so that I could try for AdSense on my Gmail account.

I sent a new request for an AdSense on Gmail. I'll see if this one pulls through. I hate having to mitigate through the cumbersome  system, but hopefully this will actually work.

@Brett: Tried this again since the update and it still gives me the same issues. When I give in the slot ID "4562057479" and update it gives me that error and when I try again, my pub-id is in there again. Can't fix it in any way..

Thanks, Brett. That was super helpful and easy to find. Much appreciated!

I've just had my second jab at setting up Adsense for Bitmob but have run into the same problem. Each time Google review the ad, they decline the request due to copyright infringement. I've followed the intructions above very carefully both times. Is this an issue you're aware of?
