" This is a great article. As others have said it sort of has us thinking. Part of that is because you have only covered part of the topic. This top could go in a number of directions and that is indicitive of a definition problem. It's hard to cover mobile games and app games because, quite frankly, there are so many of them. We have a lot of games to play these days and reviewers had enough problems just keeping up. Add every game to the console/PC list that comes out on XBLA, PSN, indie games, and now mobile/app games and when would the press get a chance to sit down if they had to cover all that content. It makes more sense to me for new departments to open up to sort of digest/filter that information out.

Another avenue of interpreation on this topic has to do with the fact that console games cost $59.99. As a consumer I could care less what a app game reviews for if it only costs me 2-5 bucks to buy it, but a review for a $60 dollar product is a much better investment of my time.

Again, great topic!"

" I agree with a lot of what you're saying, but I think the game's biggest downfall was the soundtrack. I think ODST's campaign was twice as good as Reach's but mostly because specific jazz-inspired songs went so well with the game's mood.

I think every Halo game had 1 or 2 specific missions with incredibly memorable moments, but those moments were defined by a specific track, Reach doesn't have those moments because it doesn't have those tracks. At least I'd say that's at least 50% of the problem."

" I was with you until you believed that review scores would disappear. I agree with you that they are pretty meaningless to those of us enamored in our favorite medium, but to the average user, the average consumer, video game reviews mean a lot. If they can only afford 1 or 2 games a month, something like Metacritic just makes sense. It's a site designed to give average people the idea of what a game would rank to an average consumer.

We live in a hypermediated world and I suspect people will find their time more and more consumed, not less so, which means that a large chunk of society is always going to need a site like Metacritic, as annoying as it is to us.

I'm not saying that we are or aren't better then the average consumer. I'm just saying we're not the Metacritic crowd and I don't see that crowd going away. Movies have been around for awhile and they're a undeniably respected medium, but Rotten Tomatoes is still a successful website. In fact, I'm guilty of using them to decide on which movie to watch.

I agree though, reviews have gotten A LOT better then they were 8 to12 years ago."

" Glad something was written about this game. I really liked it at the time of it's release, but I seriously lack the time or patience for a game like that these days.

Dante was a cool, but a frivolous addition."

" Awesome story, a friend of mine a few years back just gave me the EGM issue for free. I love Amano's work even if it doesn't translate into the games all that well."

" I just recently played through Phantasy Star Universe, while it was okay, I certainly didn't see a reason to play it for more then a few weeks. I loved Phantasy Star Online Episode 1 and 2, but like the side scrolling brawler, I think this kind of game just doesn't deliver enough for the current generation.

I agree though, wipe the subscription fee, keep charging for the DLC."
