I wouldnt say "Tragically" Mrs. Jeter died before DQ6 came out, I would say "sadly". Tragically would imply that the most inportant thing in her life was gaming and by not playing DQ6 her life was an utter failure. Can you imagine a 91 year old their death bed screaming with their fist in the air "Damn you God... I wanted to play DQ6!".

Heck, she lived to be 91. We could all wish to live that long. Condolances to her family

I could not agree more! I am about 10 missions in and I am deeply annoyed by the dialog. Feels like I am playing a 12 year old game. Great comic strip by the way.

Great article! I hoep more people see this documentary. I have seen it 3 times and absolutely love it. The fellow from Japan who went to get the tetris publishing rights, Hank Rogers , was featured in Robert Ashleys most recent "A Life Well Wasted" pod cast titles "Big Ideas".

Ahh I got ya Evan! Thank you for clarifying that for me. I agree with your accuracy idea though as they were definitely not the inventors of the home console, just the innovators who were at the right place, right time, and had the right marketing to succeed. As for the comparison of the kleenex, that went through my head as well. Here in Canada we have another one which is all arena ice resurfacing machines are called Zambonies, where Zamboni is a brand name of ice cleaning machine.

Evan Wrote: "However annoyingly, "Nintendo" became synonymous with "video game," and the industry grew around them."

I don’t know why this sentence bothers me so much, but it does. You say that Nintendo was the saving grace of the video game industry, then you say that it was annoying that “Nintendo” became synonymous with video games and the industry grew around them? This makes no sense to me. What do you expect with a “boom” in popularity of a new medium? The company leading the way typically will always have brand recognition, and because they have a head start they typically dominate for quite some time. I have never heard anyone say the following:

However annoyingly, "Coca-Cola" became synonymous with "soft drinks" and the industry grew around them.

However annoyingly, "Sony" became synonymous with "cassette players" and the industry grew around them.

However annoyingly, "Apple" became synonymous with "MP3 Players" and the industry grew around them.

Eventually though, as you said in your article the commercial success leads to competition, which often times leads to the company that brought the trend about being left in the dust (Typically for their inability to accept change, and ruling with iron fists). While I would agree that Nintendo made many mistakes, I find your message of “Nintendo saved the industry” in one sentence followed by  “annoyingly, "Nintendo" became synonymous with "video games," and the industry grew around them” to be a tad bit contradicting. Then again maybe I am misinterpreting what you are implying.

On a side note: Nintendo is still synonymous with video games. I can’t tell you the number of times I have heard a non gamer saying that someone is playing a “Nintendo” even though they are playing a Play Station or Xbox, or they are playing a “Gameboy” because they have a handheld in their hands. Nintendo will be synonymous with video games for a long long time, especially with the major popularity of the Wii and DS lite with casual gamers.

On another side not: Great article. I must say it was very well put together and I learned about the evolution of other entertainment forms and the censorship that they went through.

Oh and I just realized I am criticizing what Evan said in an article where he is  promoting free speech... a little ironic me thinks.

Man I loved the Vic 20 when I was growing up. Played a lot of a game called Radar Rat Race. I found my families vic 20 about 5 years back in an old chest in a closet. The system still worked just fine. it was hilarious playing the games off of the cassett tapes again.

I havent used Ebay in a long time. I recall buying my Game Cube from there that was supposed to be new back in 2002 and it had a big chip on the front of it. it still worked, but it was obviously not new. I was pissed. Tired to get ebay to help me out... they didnt do jack to help me so I was stuck with it. Luckily it worked well.

Then I bought a copy of Legend of Zelda Wind Waker from a trusted seller (with about 49/50 sales being positive). Well this fellow decided to rip a huge string of people off in a row. I paid $60 CAD for the game and it never showed up at my house. The guy would email me saying it should be there soon. Anyways eventually I noticed a lot of new negative feedbacks on his account. He ripped off around 20 people with the same deal. I contacted ebay for help, they said there was nothing they could do.

At the time I was using money orders though Canada Post. I tried going through them to get my money back but they said it would take 6 months to process so I said screw it as I didn't have the time of day for that. If I had my time back I would have pushed it as I think the person who ripped me off could have been charged with Mail fraud as they stole a money order. After that I basically stopped using ebay for buying gaming related items (an any items in general)

I am with you Tyler! I have never used them before, and if I did I would feel guilty about it. Sure I ahve looked up some easter egg hints when I completed a game, but never anything to help with the main quest. As for LoZ:OoT I was stuck at the water temple for nearly 1 week (~15 hours of game play). I refused to get help.... and luckily I figured it all out. What a rush when I was all said and done!

I basically have a code that I follow: If I cant beat the game without help I do not deserve to beat the game. I know it is hokey, but thats how I roll. I would feel guilty (and embarrassed) as heck if I ever got help with FAQs. The only game I have never finished was Metroid Prime 2. I got ~30 hours in, stopped playing for 1 month due to final exams, and couldn't figure it out when i got back. I didn't have the heart to go back and play the game over again, and I definitely didn't have the heart to look up a FAQ. I just feel like its a game that beat me, and thats that.

@Jeffery I agree with your sediments, however; I did not mean to imply that I “pitty” these people, I meant to say I have compassion for them. I think the first step in helping someone who is in need, is having compassion for the situation they are in. By calling someone out and saying what they are doing is stupid, you put them in a defensive state right from the start. Even if you have good intentions in making a difference in their lives, they will not be very receptive. If I knew someone who was involved with this type of activity, and were sinking large amounts of money and time into it, I would definitely confront them about it and try to help them out. Just becoming closer friends with someone can lift their spirits and confidence enough to lift them out of the isolation they are feeling.

Hey Brandon, you should edit your response as the bit-mob staff want everyone to have fun answering this quiz (aka they dont want people to post the answers). I did the same thing about a month ago, put the answers up. If you want to see the answers there is a link above the mario pics to see how many you had right.
