News Blips:
Microsoft insists that core games will have a place on Kinect. Microsoft Interactive Entertainment Senior Producer Kevin Unangst thinks that developers are in a frenzy over Kinect's successful holiday debut and believes that will translate into a lot more game experiences that core players crave. "There are many [hardcore games] coming," said Unangst in an interview with CVG during a recent spring showcase. "This is sort of scratching the surface of what's happening, but we've got Child of Eden here today, we've got Twisted Pixel's Gunstringer... and certainly you're going to see more." What you won't see, however, are games that simply tack on motion controls as a gimmick. According to Unangst, Microsoft wants Kinect development to evolve naturally in order to take full advantage of the platform's strong points.
Infinity Ward will release a badly needed security patch for Modern Warfare 2. The update should finally shut out the hackers who have plagued the game's competitive multiplayer, especially on the jailbroken PlayStation 3. The exploits gave players unlimited ammo, an exaggerated jump, and invulnerability. The PS3 will be getting the patch tomorrow, March 8, while Xbox 360 and PC players will receive it at a later date. Now, if only they could find a way to patch out the racists on Xbox Live....
Developer High Voltage has a version of Conduit 2 up and running on the Nintendo 3DS. While Conduit 2 is still a Wii-only game, the team showed off a proof-of-concept demo on the 3DS at last week's Game Developers Conference. It would be an intriguing addition to the 3DS, although it'd likely just start up the same "this handheld needs a second analog stick" complaints we've been hearing for years with the PSP. [GamePro]
Angry Birds will be attacking Facebook within the month. Having conquered nearly every other platform out there, the physics-based puzzler hits Facebook in the next few weeks, likely with a few tweaks to take advantage of the social network's strengths. I for one am ready to bow down to our new overlords: Humanity had a great run, but it's time we hand over the keys to those remarkably grumpy birds that have quickly overtaken the planet.
