Looks like PSN has been down for a few hours today in preparation for a system update on March 10th, 2011. Not just any update though, as this one is taking console games to the cloud.
A month ago I wrote an article addressing the PlayStation cloud rumor and what it could mean for the future of gaming. Today, Sony officially announced that they are indeed bringing cloud storage to the PS3 for all PlayStation Plus users.
The cloud-based online storage allows users to store up to 150MB of game-save data, with a maximum of 1000 data files. There is a caveat that backing up copy-prohibited data may be only be restored once per 24-hour period, but you can basically access your saves from any PS3 by logging onto PSN.
The feature should launch after updating to system software v3.60, and most current PS3 titles will be compatible. Moving forward, all new PS3 titles will have the capability to offer the storage option, bypassing the hard drive altogether.
Glad to see Sony continuing to make the PlayStation Plus subscription seem relevant. Is anyone considering subscribing to Playstation Plus after this announcement? Here is a link to the official press release.
