Resident Evil 2’s legacy lives on, since its release in 1998 it has sold almost 5 millions of copies sold, with several ports ranging from the Dreamcast to Game.com. Thirteen years later and gamers still want to return to Raccoon City, with Resident Evil 2 appearing in arbitrary lists of games that need to be remade. Yet, despite the fans desire to go back, the series has moved forward in a different way.

Frank West returns with Dead Rising 2: Off the Record. I question whether or not we really need this game and the fan reactions surrounding the announcement.

Most of anticipated games this year are sequels. Why is it that when I look at 2011 the majority of the games that are coming out are from existing franchises? Why is the gaming industry spending more on games yet becoming creativity restricted?

Dead Rising combines many elements that open-world games can learn from to create more believable playing spaces.

Bigger, better and more badass is the typical approach to any sequel of a videogame. All you have to do is put everything on a bigger scale and you’ve got yourself a sequel. Bioware didn’t do this with Mass Effect 2. They did the opposite.

Since the beginning of this generation we've seen a flood of developers putting co-operative play into single player games as an afterthought, but does this actually hurt the quality of the game?

"Well, I'm not so sure about Demon's Souls but yeah there are some exceptions. Amnesia comes to mind, but I was talking about horror games as a whole really."

"The best time to tell when a product is a flop is usually in hindsight. Not every console sells like hotcakes immediately like the Wii, and usually it takes awhile for it to get into it's stride. For example, the Wii's sales are now starting to drop as it reaches the end of it's product life cycle, but in contrast the X360's sales are starting to take off after almost 6 years after its launch.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it took the DS awhile before it started selling like crazy. Sometimes these things just need time to develop an identity before consumers are more willing to jump i"

"@Josh that's true, neither NPD or VCChartz count DD or rentals, but your statement is unfair; It may lack some data, but NPD's retail data is 100% accurate. NPD is the industry standard, and most of the large platforms pay a lot of money to participate in it, because it's proper market research .VGChartz is not because its either using estimations, or it's taking NPD data and adjusting it to suit their own needs.

@Matthew It's much more difficult now, but still getting NPD information, it's just taking awhile now because we're having to wait for sources to brag about their success"

"I wouldn't recommend!! I hope the edit feature comes back soon."

"I would really recommend not using VGcharts as an source. Most of it is estimated  and not actually accurate. NPD is the industrial standard when it comes to sales.

Anyway good article, I agree that developers should respect fans (and not pander to them), and that betraying the original vision of the game in pursuit of sales will hurt the series critically. However, not all change is bad; Resident Evil 4 was a radically different. It's definitely a balancing act as James says in the Editor's note."

"I remember playing this and enjoying it for all the reasons you have described. Still waiting for episode 2 and 3 but apparantly Telltale games are handling the release of them now."

"I met a zombie once. Bit depressed and always late for parties but otherwise a nice chap.

Do we need to ask who the next Nazis are? At this point in the generation WW2 games are unpopular and instead we've got Russians and terrorists who basically play the same role as cannon fodder. You're right about the zombie genre; it's oversaturated and mostly rubbish but there are a few good games that get it right, when it comes down to it both these types of games sell regardless of quality.

I'm not so sure about aliens/monsters though. I agree in the sense that they give the artist more freedom in terms of physical design, but most of the time they're just humanoid creatures that basically serve the roll to either endanger the human race (i.e. Locusts, Zombies etc) or to compliment the player by saying how awesome the human race is (I.e. Mass Effect)."

" OoT was good but I don't agree with the opinion that it's the best game ever. It was fun, but it had flaws, and I wouldn't say it's the best Zelda game - which I think belongs to Link's Awakening.

I do agree that some games should be played by every gamer; not because they're the 'best' games but to appreciate the medium's heritage."

"@Alex Yeah thats true, Videogames are a business after all.

@Andrés I want this game as well and it probably helps that I found Dead Rising 2 to be a bit boring.  I'm not sure if this article came of a bit negatively, but I was just trying to capture both sides of the argument. As Alex said, this is kind of a cash grab, but it does look like they're putting effort into it. I'm not sure if that makes it acceptable but I'm intrigued either way. Also, I'm quietly confident that they will have the option to disable checkpoints."

"@ Nate, fixed the twitter link and rewrote some parts of the article (although there are probably some typos still).

@ Yeah kinda, It's too soon to announce Dead Rising 3 but some people will argue that this release will take away resources from it, if it is indeed in development.

Regarding this game, I'm happy it's been announced. Probably helps that I findthe sequel to be boring so I'm happy to go back for a proper sequel, but I know some fans have expressed disappointment that it's the same location again."

"Was this inspired by the GAF topic on this subject? Anyway, I like TF2s approach on this matter: Hiding K/D and using points to gauge how well you're playing; it's very easy for a medic or engineer to get to the top of the leaderboard."
