Do we really need Dead Rising 2: Off the Record?

It's Frank... Frank West.  Remember that name cause the whole world's gonna know it in three days when I get the scoop.

It took longer than three days, but the entire gaming community knows the name Frank West. Now Capcom has announced Dead Rising 2: Off the Record; an alternative take on Dead Rising 2 where Frank West is the hero, not Chuck Greene.

Capcom’s logic is pretty transparent: Most of the fanbase still see’s Frank as the identity of the game. Why not give them what they want, develop the fanbase before the inevitable release of Dead Rising 3 and make a quick buck?

I’m a huge fan of the original Dead Rising and even I’m questioning if we really need this.  Shouldn’t Capcom be putting their resources into developing original I.Ps or more deserving sequels? Capcom has a reputation of cashing in on their successful franchises, but even then it’s odd to see them develop this while flat out refusing to localise Ace Attorney Investigations 2.

Although the media coverage has been positive, some parts of the gaming community are having difficulty digesting this announcement.  Fans are accusing it of been a cash-in attempt, questioning why it isn’t DLC and there’s anger that it appears to be full RRP because of an Amazon listing,  although the price is likely to be to be a placeholder.

Blue Castle Games says that for all intents and purposes this is a new fully featured game. Perhaps comparing it Grand Theft Auto IV: Episodes from Liberty City would illustrate their point because both games are essentially ‘new games’ but they simply share the same location.

The scepticism is justified; there’s a thin line between taking advantage of your fans and giving them what they want. The question is which category does OTR fit into? From what little we do know, OTR could the sequel Dead Rising 2 should have been.

In OTR, Frank became famous after he published his book on the Willamette incident; even getting his own chat show, but what goes up must come down. When we meet him again in OTR, he’s overweight, balding and attempting to get back into the limelight by appearing on Terror is Reality as a C-grade celebrity – much in the same way how celebrities try to relight their fame by appearing on I’m a Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here.

The camera returns, including the ranking system that is in the original. Other changes are more typical, with new psychopaths, combo weapons, areas and a mode. Equally, the engine has been optimised meaning quicker load times.

Yet there’s one addition I’m having difficulty with: Checkpoints. Now whenever you enter into a new area or fight a psychopath the game checkpoints. This is a horrible. The whole point of the save system is to add value to death and create tension, and having checkpoints would lose that.  Blue Castle argues that players are still complaining about the save system, however I’d argue that compromising the game’s design would ruin it.

It’s clear that they’re making this game for their fans. Most of these changes are good and seem to bring the game back to the same tone that the original offered, but the changes to the save system worry me.

Do we really need Dead Rising 2: Off the Record? Probably not, but I’m still intrigued by it. If Capcom can prove to us that that it’s worth revisiting then I’ll be there. Yet there’s a kind of hopelessness to it; even if it is an amazing game it will have no bearing on Dead Rising 3.

My writing schedule has halted completely with a large work increase but I couldn't resist with this. I should be able to releasing content weekly again next month, until then you can follow me on twitter!

A few typos and your twitter link doesn't work, but otherwise pretty good and very topical (esp with the ties to the Ace Attorney information).

We don't need it, but damn do I want it. I'll buy another release of DR2 in a heartbeat, even if it's just a remix. It's not my place to tell Capcom what to do. if Blue Castle wants to develop another DR2, people like me will buy it, and everyone who feels the need to complain about it can just not buy it. No worries.

Frankly (no pun) I'd rather have this than DR3. If they were already working on 3, you can bet it would be rushed and without a lot of the improvements a DR sequel would need at this point. Spending more time with the last game might help them figure out what to do with 3, which is fine by me.

i agree, better not rush a sequel when all you need to make a spin-off is a graphics improvement and a few new areas

@ Nate, fixed the twitter link and rewrote some parts of the article (although there are probably some typos still).

@ Yeah kinda, It's too soon to announce Dead Rising 3 but some people will argue that this release will take away resources from it, if it is indeed in development.

Regarding this game, I'm happy it's been announced. Probably helps that I findthe sequel to be boring so I'm happy to go back for a proper sequel, but I know some fans have expressed disappointment that it's the same location again.

I'll probably pick it up because I like Dead Rising, but I know some of the changes will anger me. Checkpoints will ruin the pace and tension of Dead Rising, so I'm totally against those. And as far as cheap cash-ins go, this is bad. If it's priced ala SSFIV and Lost Planet: Colonies, it won't be a bitter pill to swallow, but I wouldn't put it past Capcom to rip us off.

Oh, and I'm majorly butthurt about not getting an Ace Attorney Investigations 2 localisation, so Capcom aren't in my good books at the moment. If they butcher the Dead Rising gameplay with this, I'll have even more of a reason to loathe them.

With budgets being so big for this generation of gaming it's easy to see why game companies are revisiting locales once their games are released with little spin-off games so they can reuse the engines and environments they already spent millions building. Still, I can understand how it seems like just a cash grab, because it kind of is, but they likely need to do this kind of thing in order to make it profitable to spend so much money building things in the first place.

Personally, I want this game a lot. Even though, I didn't know about the "checkpoints". I wonder if they can be disabled. Not like they bother me too much, but eh.

I do agree with what some say (one of my friends, for example). That it should be DLC. Hell, I'd love it if Capcom did something similar to what Rockstar did with GTA4's Episodes and RDR's Undead Nightmare, releasing as both retail and DLC. That way everyone would be happy.

@Alex Yeah thats true, Videogames are a business after all.

@Andrés I want this game as well and it probably helps that I found Dead Rising 2 to be a bit boring.  I'm not sure if this article came of a bit negatively, but I was just trying to capture both sides of the argument. As Alex said, this is kind of a cash grab, but it does look like they're putting effort into it. I'm not sure if that makes it acceptable but I'm intrigued either way. Also, I'm quietly confident that they will have the option to disable checkpoints.

People will argue that DR3 is already in development, but unless those people work at Capcom, that's not much of an argument. It's pure speculation. It's a habit of gamers to extrapolate based on what they think is the most logical outcome in their minds and claim that that's what the company in question will definitely do.

It may be a cash grab, but I'll buy into it. It was originally positioned as a director's cut, and having enjoyed DR2 so thoroughly, I'll gladly pay for that.

sorry to B**** but they need to have a constant revenue and if people liked DR2 they will come for the "sequel" along with people that want to play the game for the first time
