Mortal Kombat has always been known for its violence and gore, but everyone has forgotten about the true terror...
This week on XBLIG Fridays, learn about a game that does nothing different, but still manages to be a stand-out treat.
This is my entry for the October 2011 Writing Challenge, which is the 'Levels of Shame' challenge.

"I mainly agree about the time limits; knowing that you only have until the clock reaches zero (or 10:00 if it's a Sonic game) is not only nerve racking, but a motivator to have you play the game more efficently.

This actually reminds me of something that happened to me while play Super Mario 3D Land just yesterday... the castle of the first Special world has you saving... well, you know who, but before the level starts, the 'hurry up!' jingle plays and displays that you have thirty seconds.  THIRTY SECONDS!  Needless to say, I hauled butt, and grabbed the few time things as well as the coins... but after getting through that, I realized that I was surely playing the game lazily before that!  It's interesting to see what a ominous ticking clock does to a gamer."

"I'm not sure if Nintendo will fail, but I'm a little worried about the Wii U's timing, more than anything; it reminds me a bit of the Dreamcast.  Sure, it's a bit ahead of the competition, but if Sony/Microsoft make a new console in the next couple of years, it might blow the Wii U out of the water, and then Nintendo's console will be made 'inadequate' only after a year or two.  I just feel they're jumping the gun a little with the 'next gen', like Sega did; release consoles too soon, and the competition can trump you by waiting and utilizing new hardware.

I mean, I don't know if Nintendo has a choice in the matter, it looks like Wii support, third party or otherwise, is teetering off...  Regardless, only time will tell!"

"Terrific write up!  Realism is something I don't see much of a point of in the majority of games... and the ones that benefit from it (like the yearly sports games) do not need MORE of it.  Really, if you're trying to make a completely realistic experience, I don't think many people are really going to enjoy playing it."

"Actually, you can map controlling the cross-hairs to the face buttons.  Being a lefty, and refusing to invest in a Cricle Pad Pro, I tried it out to get past the 'using my dumb hand for precise movements' problem, but it was... very clunky, to be honest.  I won't disagree that Uprising certainly has some control issues, though."

"Nice writeup!  Dragon Quarter definately seems like a 'love it or hate it' type of game... people probably don't like having to play through the story multiple times to get to the end...

Now that I think about it, NieR does something kinda like that, too, since you have to beat the game multiple times to get the true ending, and you see new stuff on each playthough (or so I've heard; I'm still on my first playthrough), and it got about the same reception.  I guess not everyone likes new and crazy mechanics. :("

"You've said all I've wanted to say about Bastion, and in a much better way, too.  I've only finished the game a few days ago, so all the memories and moments are still fresh to me, as well. I dunno, Bastion's really just a game everyone should experience.  I find it hard to describe to anyone that asks about it, though.  Not exactly a ringing endorsement, eh?

I did make that same choice, although I was completely torn by it, due to other plot mechanics.  Hey, why bother if... well, you know."

"Haha, I gotta say, there's nothing like ramming slighty lopsided at enemies to do damage... it's just so much fun.  Not that I dislike Ys's new battle mechanics, but I kind of miss the old way."

"No problem!  Thanks for looking! :)"

"Oh man, Falcom.  I really wish more people cared about their games, so that we could get more of their recent entries published in English, but it's more than understandable why it isn't.  Still, though, a lot of their games can be fantastic... if you don't mind getting kicked in the balls and running around in circles every once and a while, and dealing with some odd mechanics... I know that happened to me a few times while playing the PSP remakes of Ys I&II.

I guess it's kind of lucky that XSeed wants to publish Falcom's games in the West now.  While it probably won't start a revolution of new fans, at least the die-hard fans can get their hands on some goodness."

"Huh, I didn't notice that before, but now that you mention it, I can certainly hear it.  That's pretty neat!  :)"

"Great review!  This Kirby seems to be what I expect it to be, and despite the easy-ness, looks to be another great entry to the series.

Of course, easy games are the only thing my boyfriend and I can really play together without getting on each other's nerves; I'm much like your girlfriend in the aspect of getting other players killed. :("
