7 Reasons Why Loot Whores Will Love Borderlands

You've gone loot crazy with World of Warcraft, Champions of Norrath, Diablo, Phantasy Star Online, and more. Our own Jason Wilson's even called his wife ugly names over her greedy ways in Sacred 2. Searching for treasure, leveling up your characters, and getting that just-slightly-better weapon can get awfully addicting, and soon we'll get to experience all that in the mother of all genres.

2K Games and developer Gearbox call it a role-playing shooter. Loot addicts can call it trouble. Borderlands -- due out this October 20 for the 360, PS3, and PC -- combines simple RPG elements with a first-person shooter set in a Mad Max-style badlands world.

A lot of gamers have already experienced the allure of incremental upgrading. Good thing, because it's hard to explain to an outsider the appeal of finding an assault rifle in Borderlands that does an extra two points of damage with slightly less recoil. But this game also brings new, smart ideas to this "co-op looter" genre that's going to make it really hard for addicts to stay away....

Sharing

Similar to Resident Evil 5, whenever one player picks up any money or ammo, all the other players automatically get the same amount, thus limiting the amount of death threats or wife-name-calling in Borderlands' four-player co-op games.

Seen it

Little color-coded beams of light shoot out from fallen loot, so you can see what type they are (medicinal, ammo, weapons, etc.) from a distance away -- helpful for seeking out insta-heal pickups in the middle of a firefight. Also, a small window with relevant stats pops up when you look at any item, so you can see whether you even want to pick it up in the first place.

According to 2K Games, Borderlands will contain more than 15 million weapons.
Of course, most of those are just slight variations of each other. But still...15 million!

"Fight for your life"

If you're down (but not out, a la Gears of War) and no one's around to heal you, you can kill an enemy to revive yourself before bleeding out and respawning back at the last checkpoint.

Suck it

Just hold down a button to automatically suck up all nearby items instead of having to pick them all up individually. Brilliant!

Faceoff

Need a break from all this Mr. Rogers cooperative gameplay? Just melee attack another player. If he slaps you back, then you'll go into a one-on-one duel mode, just for fun.

Mission complete

Unlike in some co-op games (ahem, Mercenaries 2), everything you earn in co-op carries back over to your single-player game, including mission progress (unless you're playing with a host who is further into the story than you are).

Friendly fire

This doesn't really fall into the "smart idea" category, but it's silly and worth mentioning. Roland, the soldier of the four available characters/classes, can eventually upgrade to "healing bullets" that he fires at teammates to fix 'em up. Why do we get a feeling that a lot of Roland's teammates in future online sessions will get "healed" via the head or ass?

Borderlands recently went through a graphical facelift to look more colorful and cartoony.
Although no one we talked to who's involved with the game will confirm it,
we suspect it's so Borderlands looks more visually distinct from Fallout 3.

I liked borderlands before the new art style, but wow I am PUMPED for October... any word on local co-op?

Uh oh. I better keep the wife away from this.
Jason Wilson , July 29, 2009
Alright... this just sold me the game.
Joshua Perez , July 29, 2009
is this worth getting? Really?
Toby Davis , July 29, 2009
@Suriel: On consoles, it's 2P split screen local.

@Toby: This is a must-get for me for this fall, because I love those loot games. I've played every version of Phantasy Star Online (all Dreamcast versions, then GameCube, then Xbox) for hours and hours. I love this kinda stuff...lootin'!
Dan Hsu , July 29, 2009
I'll be okay. I was one of the few who tried WOW (played it about 5 hours on a trial) and just couldn't get into it. I guess what I realized is WOW next to Cocaine just isn't shit
Joshua Garcia , July 29, 2009
This game seems to take the best from many games (PSO, TF2's unique art style, Gears' dueling), and combine it into something that could be the next big online thing. Nice read too!
Lance Darnell , July 29, 2009
That's great to hear, Dan! I've been looking everywhere, and I don't think I've seen a single preview that mentions that.
Suriel Vazquez , July 29, 2009
I am so freaking excited for this game. There are so many awesome games coming out in October... I think I am going to have skip a few meals that month...breakfast lunch and dinner...
Evan Campbell , July 29, 2009
Wowzers, this game sure looks purdy in screenshots.

I've shied away from loot-heavy games in the past, partly because the standard fantasy setting doesn't do it for me, and partly because I don't want to get addicted.

But I *love* apocalyptic settings, and that cell-shading really appeals to me... I hope this isn't my gateway drug.
Brett Bates , July 29, 2009
Yeah, I think this game looks great (art style-wise). Definitely going to have to check it out.
Demian Linn , July 29, 2009
I've had this reserved at GameStop for quite some time now. Briefly considered shifting the deposit to something else when I heard about the shift in art style before hanging my head in shame at the very thought.
Jordan Sommers , July 29, 2009
Well, it's by Gearbox, and they developed the Brothers in Arms series as well as Half-Life: Opposing Force.

It's Randy Pitchford! You've gotta trust him
Omar Yusuf , July 29, 2009
It does sound cool while not being overly serious as well. Only worry here is the variation in maps, loot and enemies. Three million different weapons or not, it's going to be hard to beat Diablo II in this area.

Nice to see Gearbox picked up that "Suck up everything" button from Space Siege, every hack 'n slash game should get that from now on.
Ward Huypens , July 29, 2009
I am really excited for this. All the innovations sound great. Finally a loot game that is not just a rehash of the Dark Alliance formula (I'm looking at you Sacred!)
Anyone got an idea how much room there is to move within the class structure? I would've preferred it to be classless like Fallout, and have more character model customisation, but its nice to see the concept come to fruition. Here's hoping its as slick as that latest gameplay vid with the developers spewing out some very cool guns.
Tristan Loney , July 29, 2009
So will you be just getting this for xbox or PS3?
Toby Davis , July 29, 2009
I haven't followed this game at all but it looks really cool. I'll be keeping a lookout for it from now on.
David Matos , July 29, 2009
ah, I hope this turns out solid. I had a sick PSO addiction back in the day... and a slightly less hideous addiction to WoW... so hopefully this will quench some of my co-operative/loot finding thirst.

Is it a little sad that one of the teenage memories that stands out for me, was the day I found a spread needle? ... you know what? I already know the answer.
John Michael , July 29, 2009
I foresee losing my Autumn to this game.
Bill Niles , July 29, 2009
Aw crap. Mentions of Diablo, PSO, and Sacred all ensure that this is now a Must Have and will be one more game that prevents me from ever getting sleep.

A conspiracy I tell you! Don't think the Nazi Zombies are innocent - they're in on it, too!
Keith Schloemer , July 29, 2009
@Tristan: A bit...just in terms of what you'd expect: As you level up, you can focus on different skills and skillsets to upgrade. So different people will end up with different versions of the same character, yes.

Dan: What do you know about characters' clothing/armor options in Borderlands? I'm excited about pretty much everything in this game except that all the screenshots I've seen have the characters looking exactly the same, and there's been no mention (at least that I've heard/read) of any sort of physical character customization.

I hate to say it but it might be a dealbreaker for me if I can't give my guy a chicken suit. (Okay, maybe not a dealbreaker but still dissapointing.)
Jordan Vincent , July 30, 2009
damn it, i am screwed
Jeff Crahan , July 30, 2009
@Jeff don't worry a lot of us are in this same boat
Toby Davis , July 30, 2009
Wow. This has been on my radar for a while, but after reading the article I'm even more pumped for it. It seems to be almost like Diablo with guns. Now do I get for the PC for the controls, or for the 360 so I can play with my friends? Decisions decisions.
Louis Bracero , July 30, 2009
@Jordon: I honestly don't know, sorry!

I promise I will buy this if Randy Pitchford demoes it for me personally.

Apparently, the game is exciting, he says.
Andrew Hiscock , August 01, 2009
the healing bullets death card in call of duty: world at war is a life saver in veteran play, I thnk it's a really good idea and am glad to see it implemented in other games
Justin Price , August 12, 2009
This game wasn't on my radar. It is now.
