Five Unlikely E3 News Items

Editor's note: Rather than drum up a list of tired E3 announcement predictions, Alex gazes into his crystal ball and tells us what we won't be seeing at this year's expo. All his guesses seem perfectly logical to me. -James

As E3 approaches, it brings with it a slew of predictions from every game site and podcast imaginable. Since so many leaks slip out before the show every year, this trend can often get pretty dry. In the span of a few days, game companies disprove the press' elaborate guessing games, and everyone else forgets everything they said in the first place. No one ever manages to guess the real surprises: Did anyone guess that Nintendo and Valve would announce Metroid: Other M or Left 4 Dead 2 last year?

So rather than go through the whole rigmarole of a prediction post, I figured I would highlight the news we are sure to not see coming out of this year's Expo. After all, it's easier to predict what won't happen than what will. You have a much better chance of success. Here are five things that I am fairly confident you won't see in any E3 2010-related news. Feel free to add your own ideas in the comments.

Nintendo Announces Star Fox for the Wii

I'm putting this on the list because I'm sick of Nintendo disappointing me, and I need to let go. A new Star Fox for the Wii -- that plays like the SNES and N64 installments -- is so obvious that Nintendo will probably never do it. If they want to get buzz behind their conference like they did last year with Metroid: Other M, this would be a game to do it. But I imagine they are going to coast on a new Zelda title this year. I need to let go of my dream for a new Star Fox in the same way all those misled Kid Icarus nostalgists need to.

Microsoft Announces a Portable System

Despite countless cool-looking mock-ups and rumors, Microsoft would be crazy to jump into the handheld market right now. As a company, Microsoft isn't content to be in the middle of the pack and always strives to dominate. Unless the folks at Microsoft are ready to throw everything they have behind a product, they won't put it out. E3 2010 is all about the Natal. Not to mention that Nintendo will be focusing on the 3DS, and Sony is probably going to do something with PSP, too -- the PSP 2 perhaps?

Nintendo Mentions Virtual Console...at All

Does Nintendo even remember that Virtual Console exists? I think the guy that they put in charge of pulling the new-game lever at Nintendo of America has Alzheimer's and only remembers to pull it on his good days. Most of the time this fellow probably stumbles around not sure of who he is and only realizes he hasn't pulled the lever once every three weeks during a rare lucid moment. And then we get Kirby Super Star. Since they already ignore Virtual Console, and their hands are full with the 3DS, a new Zelda, and...uh...the release of a black Wii, it's pretty obvious we won't be hearing much about new Virtual Console releases.

People Come Away Excited About the PlayStation Move

I'm not entirely sure why Sony is worrying about trying to launch this peripheral when they're bringing up the rear in sales and have a struggling handheld they need to give a kick in the ass. But as with Natal, Sony would have to get everything just right to not have gamers meet them with complete indifference. And let's face it: It isn't going to happen.

People Come Away Excited About Project Natal

Gamers are generally skeptical and quick with the snarky quips. With a subject as touchy as motion control, Microsoft needs to address three main concerns: the tech, the price, and the games. Do you really think all three of these components will be perfect enough to make jaded journalists walk out of the conference acting like little kids who were just told they could have a puppy? We're already hearing rumors of a $150 price tag on Microsoft's bad boy, which could easily be a deathblow itself. It seems unfeasible that Microsoft will nail down every important detail.

Even if Nintendo announced a Star Fox reboot on Wii, they'd fuck it up just like Punch Out!! and New Super Mario Bros. Holding the Wiimote sideways is not a substitute for a real controller! They'd probably make you hold the Wiimote like a paper airplane, too.

If they just made the Remote a pointer, the A button the button for firing and used the nunchuck to guide the plane then I could see Star Fox being simply amazing on the Wii.

I agree with Rob, though. They would find a way to screw it up by adding in on-foot sections or something else other than flying missions.

I like your control scheme, Frank. Though it'd be nice if they also allowed Gamecube controller support. Either way, I don't think they're making any big surprise announcements this year. Maybe Pikmin 3, but they'll probably just coast on Zelda and a bunch of family games.

Why all of the Star Fox love? I understand it's a good, fun series, but how about we get something new from Nintendo? Or anyone, for that matter -- too many sequels!

Star Fox is about making precise movements -- you just can't do that with the Wiimote as a pointer. Maybe the Motion Plus can address that, but I don't know. Just let me use the classic controller!

I am with you guys on the need to use the classic controller!

Jason- For me, Star Fox was a big part of what got me back into gaming regularly. It, Goldeneye, Mario 64 and Zelda were instrumental in me being as into games as I am today. I played the NES a ton, but missed out of the Super Nintendo.

While the games since Star Fox 64 have sullied the series repuation a good deal, I will always hope that Nintendo will one day put out a worthy sequel. They haven't come out with a great Star Fox game in a long time, and while I do love original ideas, I also hesitate to get too excited about new Nintendo properties since they are typically crapola like Wii Music or just another Wii _____ game.

Nintendo announcing anything exciting would be a good change of pace.

Announcing GBA titles on the VC would be pretty sweet!

@Lance, announcing Mother 3 as a GBA title on the VC would be even sweeter.

Dang, Alejandro, I was just on my way to mention us Mother folks as the model for a fanbase which has long since sent its expectations down the Memory Hole.  Actually, I kind of prefer the big N's hands-off approach to my favourite series over their consistent bungling of the Star Fox franchise (although I count myself as one of the six people who appreciated what they were trying to do with Command.)

Guillaume, if you weren't at least reasonably optimistic about the Other M announcement -- if no single part of the phrase "new Metroid game by Team Ninja" touches your cold, dead heart -- then I have to wonder what, if anything, will satisfy you this year.  Yes, we've all had time to think up concerns since the reveal, but the moment they chose to unveil it was perfect for at least a matter of minutes.

Rob, you're nuts.  The sideways wiimote is a good simulation of the old NES controller, hand-cramping hard edges and all, and Punch-Out! was great.  Unless you're one of those Super Punch-Out! stalwarts who liked the manual super-mode option, in which case I guess I can't blame you.

And Alex, I'm surprised you didn't share the Wii Vitality Sensor in the new-tech ho-hum category.  Every fanboy from here to GameFAQs has explained to me how "they're totally going to use it to make survival horror games even scarier!"  Which admittedly has me a little excited, but in reverse: I can't wait to show those zombies just how cold-blooded I am.

@Kevin I've never really cared about Star Fox, but the reason Mother is safe is because it's basically the only instance of a game that's the result of a single vision in recent Nintendo history. Since the Super Nintendo days, most of Nintendo's larger title have been the result of a ton of internal collaboration and refinement. This has generally been a really good thing, too. But thankfully Mother is the result of Itoi-san's sole vision, and Nintendo has been content to let him maintain total creative control over the series. This means it will probably never be whored out for a quick buck....

It also means Mother 4 is very unlikely. Itoi-san would have to reverse his stance on producing it.

@Kevin - Wasn't Command basically a redone Star Fox 2? I actually bought it but wasn't immediately sucked in and never turned it on a second time. I've been meaning to go back and give it a second chance. And I was thinking of making some vitality sensor jokes but I'm not entirely sure what's going to happen with that at this year's E3. I'm sort of expecting Nintendo to have something new up their sleeve to surprise us, and I thought I was risking it enough to assume that wasn't going to be Star Fox, so I figured I'd just keep my cheap jabs aimed toward Natal and Move. Who knows what game that vitality sensor is going to be used for, but as someone who is currently playing Wii Music every night in some strange attempt to milk a sort of experiment article out of it, I can definitely tell you that Nintendo isn't infallible.

@James - Thanks for the fronter! You're the bestest! Never cared about Star Fox?! Jeez! What do you hope Nintendo surprises us with this year then? You aren't one of those awful Kid Icarus people, are you? (I'm really just baiting Lance when I bash that game, but it isn't a very good game).

Nice job, Alex! I think you're right about everything, unfortunately.

Word re: Move and Natal. Why can't controllers just be enough? WHY???

Also, I agree with everyone who mentioned EarthBound (or Mother, whatevs). If Nintendo ever decides to put EarthBound on VC, I might start believing in God. Or at least a god of video game rereleases...

While i agree with your other non predictions, why starfox? Heck we won't be seeing a kirby, starfox, pikmin, or kid icarus. It seems as if nintendo has abandoned its old franchises and begun to casualize its biggest sellers ala mario and zelda

@Drake - Just because Star Fox is the old franchise that I personally want reborn. Doesn't mean it is any less likely than the ones you mentioned. Interesting you include Pikmin though, as most of the Internet seems to be under the impression that a third is coming after Miyamoto mentioned that they were working on Pikmin at last year's E3. Personally, I think that he meant the Wii ports of Pikmin 1 & 2, and not that they were making a third. That might be proven wrong this year though.

Funny to see some of these comments after E3.  Kirby = check.  Kid Icarus = check.  Holy mother of all that is good and pure, that thing makes 3 dimensions!? = check.

And for the record, Wii Music is fantastic.
