Ever wondered how close L.A. Noire is to its literary and film roots? Well it does respond to some key themes from film noir and hardboiled detective fiction, but it also falls short in some key respects. Judging from this game at least, developers are making giant strides but still have some way to go to authentically recreate this genre.

It only really took off when Nintendo created a new market virtually overnight with the Wii, and then with mobile gaming the distinction developed and now Zinga is worth billions. But you're right: like most dichotomies, this one is false, and I much prefer your notion of "serious" as a sliding scale, across as well as within individual gamers. "Yeah I definitely agree, especially when it comes to driving games. I totally get the love of Gran Turismo and the precision cornering etc but I just find it so frustrating. Give me crazy drifting on Burnout Paradise or Driver: SF anyday, it's just a lot more fun. And D:SF definitely has that crazy switch mechanic - leaving your body to possess other drivers sounds stupid, but it was one of the most innovative and effective mechanics of 2011, if you ask me."
