Bioshock 2 will include both Games for Windows Live and SecuROM copy-protection schemes. Why do developers continue to utilize such reviled software?

"Are we so easily manipulated?" Yes. Yes, we are. I don't believe achievements encourages lazy game design, but I do believe that achievements are an outlet for lazy game designers.

I believe they're good for gamers in that they can provide additional goals to increase the longevity for a title and provide reward for situations which might be hard to reward otherwise. However, few developers seem to do this and instead attach them to tedious tasks like "Collect 500 Crows" or whatnot.
I believe achievements will play an even larger part of the next generation of games. I just developers start doing them right.

Lance, I haven't gone through it again and don't intend to. I'm not one for replaying games these days. I'm "reliving" my choices by listening to other people's experiences with it instead. I'm actually pretty happy with the ending I received after hearing about some others so I'm content to just leave the game as is now and move onto other things.

"many other provinces have been giving tax credits that it's great to see BC stepping up its game. With Vancouver being one of the largest hubs for game development in the world, the provincial government really needs to keep it from being a desirable location. Tax credits in Ontario recently wooed Ubisoft over to Toronto after all. It could have been us"

"rk: Yes, BioShock 2 and Fallout 3 have similar DRM implementations. As I mentioned, 2K (bravely) has revealed that all Games for Windows Live games, including Fallout 3, have an installation limit of 15. It is done through GFWL, not SecuROM.
It's not a huge deal to me, although I'd prefer SecuROM to be removed from the Steam version of the game as Steam already checks the executable and there's no point to checking the release date if they aren't going to let us download it until Tuesday anyway.
The game has failed to stop Zero Day Piracy even with all these methods as a 360 ISO has been floating around for days and the PC version is up as well.
Most users are hoping that they will go the way of EA and do just a disc check in the future with no DRM aside from Valve's on Steam. SecuROM DOES need to ping the activation server on install which is putting off some players.
As for the talk of purchasing the game, I'm very excited for BioShock 2 so I pre-ordered on Steam. I played through the first game on my 360 so avoided the first mess with SecuROM back in 2007. However, now that I have a new PC, I wanted to play the game with the best visuals possible (being 50% cheaper helped too)"

"l probably do this for the next game I finish. I see the same problem these days and it's the reason I can't stand reading reviews by some of the larger game sites out there. Although in their case I believe it's more a justification to spread the review across multiple pages so as to get more ad impressions"

"At what stage of development was the decision made to create a completely linear game? Was it while it was still a PS2 game? When you found out how much time and money would be needed to make a PS3 game? Or was it completely unrelated to platform?
2. The Japanese version only allows you to use the D-Pad for battles and Analog stick for the world. The other movement option is disabled no matter what. This was the case in the demo vehicles in California as well. Will this be the case in the English game and if so, why did you disable a control option? It is going to be very problematic for Xbox 360 owners due to the flimsy D-Pad.
3. Are the quality of the textures and the framerate the same on both platforms?
4. Can you backtrack to ANY section of the Xbox 360 version that is accessible on either version of the game without switching discs?
Yes, my questions are a little 360-centric as that's the version that we don't have impressions from yet! I'm still trying to make up my mind on which version to get :)
@JJ Mahoney, there are save points in the game where you save, buy/sell items, and rest"

"t's actually the only dungeon in that game with that type of design. I found it extremely frustrating as well and needed to use GameFAQs to get past it. The game isn't particularly well-designed and it receives a lot of hate, but I overall enjoyed it. It's actually extremely linear and simplistic after the spot you're at"

"id something similar although I don't think EB Games will be making much money from it. I very much enjoyed the game, but EB was running a promotion where you could trade the game in within a week for $60 in credit if you pre-ordered. As a result, I did pre-order and treated the game as a free rental. I was able to finish it within a week and return it. It wasn't even on my radar before this and trailers of the game actually turned me off. However, this trade-in deal got me into the franchise and I know I'll be there Day 1 when the sequel arrives.
With the trade-in money, I pre-ordered Miles Edgeworth: Ace Attorney Investigations and Pokemon HeartGold.
I guess everybody wins :"

"hink I know which statement prompted you to write this article and I can't blame you. It was one of the most vile, disgusting things I've seen on that community and I'm surprised the user is still allowed to post there freely.
I understand what you are trying to say as well. People definitely shouldn't misinterpret this article as blasting attractive people. Beauty and Knowledge are not mutually exclusive. However, I noticed that some of the large outlets you left out of your list are the same ones that come to mind when I think of manufactured hosts with questionable talent hired to look good in front of a camera.
Oh, and I know people hated the "new" E3 that was tried, but booth babes and large, flashy shows, don't need to be so intertwined either. I'm sure the industry could put on a nice show with lots of energy without trying to show more skin than the booth to the side"

Definitely dislike most of your battle system propositions and fortunately those won't be changed.
As for what Joe said, I'd say the end-game is pretty heavy as it is. With online multiplayer and the Battle Frontier, the Elite Four seem like small fry in comparison. In Pearl, I spent 20 hours in the single player adventure and then 230 hours doing post-game content.
I also disagree with statistical transparency as that would be overwhelming to Pokemon's target audience. Although Joey calling me telling me how his Rattatta is in the top percentage of all Rattatta (high IVs) could be toned down a bit. I do agree that IVs either need to go or be easier to calculate. They're really useless as unlike EVs, they require no choice whatsoever. Higher is always better aside from Hidden Power usage.
They're making breeding easier and easier every time. Honestly though, with people cracking the random number generator, everyone seems to have perfect Pokemon.
