"I hadn't really put together the high percentage of CGI in the movies and shows with the washed out pallette. Hmmm… That seems to make sense, given the theory behind why it occurs in games.

And I do agree with the feeling it's not going anywhere any time soon, for pretty much the same reasons you put forth here.

By the way, I must admit, it's one of those things I've noticed, and been cognizant of, but hadn't put the brain cells together to articulate. Thanks for the great article."

"It's not even just relegated to gaming. To me eyes, at least, there have been a growing number of movies and TV shows (especially in the action and horror genres) that have hit the screen with hyper-sharp focus, desaturated colors, and (in many cases) blown out whites.

It seems to be an overall trend in all manner of visual media, and it's gone from an avant garde style decision to being the norm. Not a huge fan."

"Very true. The high regard and enjoyment of most classic games comes from having been there in the moment with them. Kind of the ultimate "you had to be there" situation. Some (albeit very few) can overcome that, but that's certainly the exception."

"I've recently experienced this phenomenon myself revisiting a few of the "Classics" collections on my shelf.

I think it all boils down to "this was the best we had at the time, and it was way better than what preceded it" as the evolution progressed, especially with the 2600 games. I honestly don't recall any of my friends ever remarking that a 2600 game was even remotely bad until E.T., because we were all so stoked to have video games of any kind.

Specifically, that first Madden (and I also think of the first EA basketball games on the Genesis) was a mind-blowing experience simply because of how far advanced it was when compared to what had come before it.

In a way, it's like TV. Think of how amazing TV first was, and how jaw-dropping an 8" screen was, and COLOR"

"I share every single concern you've outlined here, and am trying my best to not just be the stereotypical "Naysaying Fanboy" that I can feel myself turning into upon hearing this news."

"I never played the first one, but reading all of the buzz about this one is making me think I missed out. Perhaps it's time to jump on the bandwagon for part 2?"

"Seconded. Very well put."

"Isn't having the word "Obituary" in the title kind of a spoiler all by itself?"

"I wonder what type of possibilities this could open up for "secret antagonist" instead of "assistant," especially in a one vs. many situation?"

"I have nothing to add, I just wanted to say that I very much enjoyed this post and found it thought-provoking."

"Agreed on "Snake Eater" feeling completely epic. It definitely snapped you into a "this is taking place in the 60's" kind of mindspace (along with many of the other tracks in the game, which felt like they were flirting with surf-rock over the usual electronica that accompanies MGS).

This doesn't even take into account the impressive use of the a capella version within the game when climbing that insanely long ladder."
