Best Writing of 2009: Dragon Age: Origins

Dragon Age's writing finds its strength in situational commentary. While many of the characters in Dragon Age have fairly archetypal backgrounds, most of them develop into something much less clichéd. They react in realistic ways to the situations they encounter, and their realism encourages you to act as you would in real life. Especially human are the inconsequential conversations that characters have while you're doing things like shopping around and talking to locals. It even manages to be funny without being too self-aware or tongue-in-cheek. These characters make me care about what happens to them, which makes it all the more heart-breaking when they choose to leave your party, along with your special armor. I really miss that armor.

Runners-Up: Uncharted 2, Brütal Legend

The characters in this title were so much more fleshed out than the ones in Mass Effect. I really grew to love my raggedy crew of misfits!

I definitely agree with this. These characters are analagous to some of the most relatable characters in movies and literature. The gamer definitely cares, at least on some level, about the characters, their actions, and what they do and what happens to them. I would have to disagree that Brutal Legend would be a runner up though simply because the dialogue seems stilted at times and forced into a framework to fit the overall feeling of the game - I did not truly feel connected to many of the characters of Brutal Legend. Dragon Age is far superior in dialogue and story telling.....but then again, it is an RPG and most RPGs are in this regard.

Some of the writing is great. But I still have issues with how "borrowed" parts of this world seem. So much of it is clearly too inspired by "A Song of Ice and Fire" for me to give them an award for writing. I'd rather see a unique world. But BioWare did do excellent work when it came to intraparty commentary. Best in any RPG to date.
