Editor's note: Evan spent his entire Saturday gaming. But before you call him a lazy bum, know he did it for charity. The guy raised $386 for the Texas Children's Cancer Center by participating in this year's Extra Life event! -Brett
This past weekend, thousands of people all over the country -- myself included -- sat in front of their televisions and played video games for 24 hours straight. Why? To raise money for the Extra Life charity event, of course. All told, we brought in more than $140,000 for the Texas Children's Cancer Center -- easily surpassing last year's total of $120,000.
Below you'll find a photo diary of my day spent gaming. Thanks to everyone who donated!
2:00 p.m.
Note that I'm blinking, not sleeping, in this pic -- although that new chair was pretty comfortable...
They should have called the Saw game "We Hope You Like Circuit Puzzles," because that's what it turns into at the end. We actually took this picture so we could solve the thing without a time limit.
8:00 p.m.
Taking a break from Saw to fulfill the musical portion of the day. Unfortunately, the videos we took were not of sufficient quality to include here. Very sorry for that.
It seems like I just can't get away from Paperback Writer, but now, having played it, I can kind of understand what all the fuss was about.
Take heed, good people, for this was when "The Rocking" actually started.
This was an experiment to see if I could actually do guitar and vocals at the same time. Turns out I could!
Just like runners need to hydrate, marathon gamers should make sure to eat carbs. Notice how Meghan pushed all the toppings she didn't like over to my side. Not that I'm complaining.
8:50 p.m.
Behold, for I have unleashed the Cowbell. (It's technically an alto bell, but I took what I could get.)
Can you even handle the Awesome Power of Rock?! I had to hold up the bell to cool it off, it ran so hot...
By the end of the song I was wailing on that thing like I caught it breaking into my apartment. I'm sure the neighbors would have loved that, had they been home.
Final results: Cowbell 1, Reaper 0.
Take heed again, good people, for this is when "The Rocking" died. My voice was pretty much wiped after this song, and I still had a couple more to go.
Sorry, Alex. While my score was still pretty decent, I butchered the song. Epic? Fail.
I'd call this an "encore," except that nobody asked for it. (I guess technically Brett asked for it, but he wasn't there.)
This is our group in Rock Band 2, Paddy's Pub. If the music thing falls through they can always be in a cartoonish boxing game.
11:07 p.m.
Having finished Saw, I played Uncharted 2 the rest of the night. There aren't many pictures from this because Meghan fell asleep on the couch. By 2 a.m., I envied her.
7:35 a.m.
The sun is coming up, and I am almost done.
8:00 a.m.
Aaaaaaaaaand...done. Another Saturday wasted. I slept till 3 p.m., went back to bed around midnight, and still made it in to work on Monday. This is either great planning or shitty planning, depending on the job.
Here's how my time broke down, game-wise:
8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.: Castle Crashers
11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.: BrĂ¼tal Legend (no pictures because Meghan was watching it).
2:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.: Saw
8:00 p.m. - 9:45 p.m.: The Beatles: Rock Band/Rock Band 2
9:45 p.m. - 11:00 p.m.: Saw (again)
11:00 p.m. - 8:00 a.m.: Uncharted 2
(Yeah, I spent a lot of time on Saw, but I wanted to finish it before I had to add it to my already unmanageable Pile of Shame.)
So that's it until next year. Thank you to all of my sponsors; your support means a lot to the children who benefit from treatment at Texas Children's Hospital, as well as to me personally. I couldn't have done this without you.
