From 8-bits to 16-bits: Video game characters show off a sexier figure

Back in the '80s I was perfectly happy with the 8-bit graphics of the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and Sega Master System (SMS). Once I saw the improved visuals of the Genesis and Super Nintendo (SNES), though, it was hard to go back.

I selected 10 classic characters at random to show you how much nicer their sprites look thanks to the wider color palette of 16-bit consoles.

Blaze

Streets of Rage 2 (SMS) Streets of Rage 2 (Genesis)

Mega Man

Mega Man (NES) Mega Man 7 (SNES)

Alex Kidd

Alex Kidd in Miracle World (SMS) Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle (Genesis)

Chimera

Final Fantasy (NES) Final Fantasy VI (SNES)

Ecco

Ecco the Dolphin (SMS) Ecco the Dolphin (Genesis)

Bowser

Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES) Super Mario All-Stars (SNES)

Space Harrier

Space Harrier (SMS) Space Harrier II (Genesis)

Ganon

The Legend of Zelda (NES) TLoZ: A Link to the Past (SNES)

Joe Musashi

Shinobi (SMS) Revenge of Shinobi (Genesis)

Mike Haggar

Mighty Final Fight (NES) Final Fight (SNES)

Bowser is definitely the laziest. He never changes.

He should take a vacation and let Wart have another go.

I feel Ecco the dolphin had more personality in the 8 bit days, the 16 bit version just looks like a generic dolphin? Also check out the butt on Space Harrier

I never thought of 8-bit Ecco like that. You're right. He's a charmer.

Genesis Space Harrier must be working out. Isn't it odd that 8-bit Harrier's cannon thing has a smiley face on the back?

Thanks, Evan! I love making these. Nostalgia is powerful emotion.

My favorite incarnation of Alex Kidd was in The Lost Stars. Just look at those ears...but please ignore the split.

I never realized that the hero of Space Harrier rode on a smiley face rocket. Lol. He's sure got a sense of humor.

Isn't Mighty Final Fight technically a move from 16-bit to 8-bit? Not that it really matters in the perspective of this article.

I was hoping someone mentioned that Mighty Final Fight actually came after Final Fight on the SNES. Leave it to J.J.O. to notice such things. :)
