VGA's: The Complete Run Down

Last night was the first time I watch the entire VGA's and let me just say *Palm to Face*.  Everything from the horrible Dane Cook jokes that just wouldn't stop to the awkward celebrity presenters, this whole show was a giant car wreck.  (And this is with out Cliffy B showing his face!)

There was one glimmer of hope that did put a band-aid over this massacre and that was Jose Gonzalez performing the song from Red Dead.  It was very well presented and performed but having to sit through 2 hours of cabbage just wasn't worth it.

The other BIG seller for the VGA's were the WORLD PREMIERS.  Here is a quick run down on what you missed out on:

Mass Effect 3 - Jason Statham need help to save earth.

Mortal Kombat - Now with Kratos and Pre-Order at Game Stop.

Portal 2 - 2 Robots looking at each other for 2 minutes.

Elder Scrolls 5 - Rock dragons coming to life.

Prototype 2 - Now with a Last boss that means something.

Uncharted 3 - Lots of sand with no bottled water.

SSX - You are now a flying squirrel.

Resistance 3 - Now with jumping aliens

Batman: AC - Dr. Strange says hello Bruce.

I was embarrassed to call myself a gamer after the show Spike put on.  The only thing that I came away with was the fact that the general public still perceives gamers as geeks, nerds and dorks.  You would think being the #1 outlet for entertainment would have a little class in honouring the past years achievement but no, instead it is turned into a CarnEvil circus.  Having the host making gay porn names of video game titles (And I mean the 2 swords types) really sets the hierarchy level for video games.

It's a real shame to see such hard working people be viewed by the WORLD as a big joke.  The people that make these great games should be honoured in a more classy way.  Hopefully Spike reassesses how 'well' these awards went for next years show.

What was supposed to be a great night for gaming turned out to be one of the most shameful experience I have ever experienced.

The VGA's are like a train wreck. A terrible spectacle that you just can't turn away from.

Sometimes I'm happy I only have the most basic of cable packages.

When on earth did Spike ever become the #1 outlet for entertainment? And what of Spike have you seen done classy? Have you seen the Guys Choice Awards? Yeah, this really is a network that strays ups the class level.

I don't spend my time losing my lunch over the Spike VGAs because I know what to expect from a Spike show. It And as much as I'd like to see something more along the lines of what happens at D.I.C.E. or GDC, those don't make for compelling television at all as they are. I attended the GDC Online Awards. Good, classy ceremony that would have to be needless padded to go on the air.

ESPN Radio host Colin Cowherd uses the saying if you're going to complain, you better have a solution. For all of the whining about the VGAs this time of year ever year, rarely does anyone offers up the fix that solves the problem of a video game awards ceremony as a television program. And remember, the part of the Grammy's, Academy Awards, Tony's and any other major awards ceremony that we see is produced as a television program. There's a reason the ratio of trophies handed out to musical performances has gradually declined at the Grammy's over the past 15 or so year after ratings started to dip.

Want to be represented in a better fashion, great. But the endless griping about everything while rarely having tangilble solutions or actions the gaming community does year round goes a hell of a lot further to prove stereotypes than what damage Spike does with a couple hour show in which I've never spoken to a non-gamer that pays attention to its existence.

Every single one of those reveals is a sequel or continuation of a (relatively recent) existing series. That's disappointing. Are the big players just out of ideas?

@Rob Honestly, I've never so much questioned whether the big players were out of idea so much as if they are scared to support any. Any time I've spent talking to developers it seems the ideas are out there. Just always seems publishers are gun shy. Then again, I also have to consider the side I've talked to.

Eh. I think the whole idea that sequels are bad for the industry is somewhat misguided. Gaming has always been built on sequels.

True, Mike, but I think a lot of that idea is rooted in the perception many of the sequels don't push fresh ideas the way sequels in the past may have. That may be looking back with rose-colored glasses and thinking ever sequel progress like Mario or Zelda, but I think that's where it comes from.

That I'm disappointed does not necessarily mean they will be bad games, Mike. But the games industry in the triple-A space is saturated with sequels like none other. At some point, I just stop caring about these worlds.

@Rob I guess I've always felt that the longer you spend developing a world, the more interesting it can be. In the right hands, of course.
