FEATURED POST
Describing a game as "addictive" is usually a somewhat figurative compliment. Some game makers, however, are looking to refine their games to make them more literally addictive.

Three of my favourite Tetris-inspired videos. One clever, one funny, one artistic. Enjoy!
As the first-person-shooter genre continues to wear itself out, multiplayer is in dire need of change. It's time to redefine the goals of multiplayer.
A gamer ponders the ultimate future of immersive gaming and motion controls.

A ZX Spectrum-inspired retrogasm, in which I consider the significance of Sir Clive Sinclair’s miniature marvel, and the games that shaped my 80s childhood.

Harness the power of portable games to defend against unwanted socializing.
Xbox-360-wireless-pad
A discussion of the nature of our relationship with our control pads and the crucial importance of that bond in an immersive experience.
I have wasted a lot of time gaming. That's not to say gaming is a waste of time. Quite the opposite. But sometimes I find myself on autopilot, spending hours pressing buttons and twiddling analog sticks, barely aware of what I'm doing, achieving nothing of value whatsoever. Do this happen to you, too?

A short piece about playing games within the rules while redefining the objectives.
Some thoughts on my perfect moment of gaming and the nature of the relationship between gamers and the games they play. Contains *huge* Red Dead Redemption spoilers.

"I have to say I read this with some disappointment (I specifically came here to avoid the news-y sites out there), although I can understand the need to drive traffic to the site.

I support the site, and want to to succeed, so the most positive thing I can think to say is that I guess it could be good, so long as there's an angle on each story (like Ryan says, short pieces on our *reactions* to news, rather than just reprinting the news itself).

Simply regurgitating quotes, posting trailers, etc in the same form as found at other sources achieves nothing more than adding to the noise of the net."

"@William Interesting stuff, but I'm curious about the way you close the piece: "If the folks at Nintendo (and Sony) don't step up their game, the only people buying their system a few years from now will be Pokémon fans."

What do you mean by step up their game? What, specifically, are you suggesting they do?

"Crazy Taxi made it really hard for me to resist driving as close as possible to other cars."

"Second the suggestion to play on easy. I've not only found it practical, I actually prefer it now. All the content, none of the frustration. "

"It's never about time, or how close the truth something is, it's about the skill the project is executed with. I am anti-censorship, but very much pro-criticism. If something doesn't pay due respect to its source material it should be outed as such and shouted down from every rooftop. But the idea of a 'statute of limitations' (or whatever other synonym for censorship you prefer) on world events is just nonsense.

"I couldn't finish Alan Wake. The story was shoddy, the acting wasn't up to much,  and the mechanics were irritating. Shine the light, bang-bang-bang, repeat ad nauseam. Every 'scare' was signposted a mile off, it was completely devoid of tension. If all it takes to create a complex character is a troubled marriage and a stalled career, then... *sigh* I don't know. But really? You rehash Stephen King plots (an author who I very much like, but is hardly literary), and expect to be praised for your storytelling? No chance.

Had it not had such pretentions, I may have been indifferent, but as an experience, it was just so *smug*. For me, the most aggravating game of the year. Except for Ghostbusters, maybe."

"Great article. Here's a request: Would you (Aaron) -- or anyone else -- be willing share a successful pitch here in the comments? It'd be fascinating to see how the tips play out in practice."

"Great, aren't they? Having seen all three for the first time recently, I felt a duty to share. Glad you liked them."

"Ack, I was going to comment at length but what's the point? Rob's said it all already. So I'll keep it short.

Achivements & Trophies: nonsense."

"@Michael No, Google is clearly not definitive. However, I just got Ghostbusters through from my friendly games rental service, and you have to press A instead of start, so I guess it's not a hard and fast rule."

"I couldn't agree more with Evan about putting John in Jack's skin -- but the final objective of using Jack to hunt down Ross was innovative and extremely satisfying."

"I'm with the Fallout nay-sayers, but agree this was a really good read.

Game Club was before my time but sounds like a wonderful idea -- what odds on a revival?"
