The controller has evolved considerably since the humble NES back in the 80's. To account for this, many new games feature lengthy tutorials, guides, and how-tos to provide the player with the smoothest gaming experience. Yet, I feel like these make me feel stupid, and they take away from a grander sense of discovery.

Greetings friend, you may or may not know me as Jackson W. Ryan (community writer). If you didn't... you do now! I am going to be here every fortnight with an article about science and video games. From evolution to psychology to analysis of cephalopod ink, I will be bringing it all back to the world we know and love: the world of video games.
Part 5 of my narrative through Shadow of the Colossus. In this entry, we see Wanda travel to defeat the seventh colossus, the thunder eel, and the eighth colossus, a terrifying shadow lizard. Their defeat marks the halfway point of Wanda's journey.

Part 4 of my narrative through Shadow of the Colossus. In this entry, we see Wanda travel and defeat the fifth and sixth colossi of the game, one a beast of the sky and the other an underground sage.
The Arab Spring and Occupy protests used social media effectively - to organize, define and clearly convey their message. They promoted civil resistance and peaceful protest. The same is now being done with Mass Effect 3 and the "Retake" campaign and the results are strikingly similar.
Part three of my ongoing narrative about my journey through Shadow of the Colossus HD, where I write from the perspective of the lonely vagabond, Wanda.
Shadow of the Colossus is a critically acclaimed and widely praised video game released by Team Ico in 2005. It was re-released as a high definition remaster in 2011 for the Playstation 3. The game tells the story of a young man named Wanda and his quest to bring a young girl back to life. What follows is part 2 of my journey as Wanda.

Not another boring "video games are art" discussion, oh no. A discussion about how art direction in video games opens the mind, and the potential pitfalls of the movement towards better graphics and more realistic environments.

"Kingdom Hearts is an action RPG and is one of Square Enix's great franchises. When they 'deviate from their tried and true roots', use established characters, they actually have done quite well. Your accusation is baseless. XIII may not have captured your or 50% of the fanbase's attention but Square Enix still made money out of it, so people must have liked it a little bit.

http://dustycartridge.com/features/its-time-for-a-final-final-fantasy/ --- either way, final fantasy as a whole needs to end."

"Who called it our generation's Apocalypse Now? Would be handy to have that instead of a link to the Wikipedia article."

"Should have focused more on the Japanese side of things, very interesting angle in my opinion and one that has not been discussed at length. The start of the article I feel like I have read at least forty three times on various websites though."

More interested because of man's awesome facial hair."

"Cheers Tim, the feedback is much appreciated. I agree that developers, in order to appeal to the wider market, must include these things in their games. Unfortunately, I still think that most of the time it is executed poorly.

As games continue to increase in complexity, I can't see this problem disappearing, however, I do think that with a level of refinement it would be much more appealing, especially to what some people call the 'hardcore' gamer. Even just the option to skip those tutorial levels is greatly appreciated. I would have loved if I played through Assassin's Creed and halfway through the game discovered that you can perform "x" or dispatch an enemy using "y"."

"That is absolutely brilliant and... seems to have completely destroyed my article in terms of getting a point across. Haha, thanks dude!"

"Cheers!

Gears of War is definitely a culprit for this, the on screen prompts can not be turned off like assassin's creed and it always tells you to LOOK with Y at the action. By doing that, it actually takes you OUT of the action and makes you an observer again, rather than an experiencer...

Make sense?"

"Thanks for the comment mate, I appreciate it. Chuck us a follow, I just noticed you were behind the Humanity article from today and followed you. That was a great piece brother, really insightful.

Re: Dark Souls. I am yet to play it. Demon's Souls however is one of the games that still lets you discover things for yourself. Ie I distinctly remember not a single word of help against every level-end boss. How crazy is that? See... people say Demon's Souls is difficult. The truth is, Demon's Souls is difficult until you work it out. Then, everything is formulaic and you can beat bosses rather easily. This is why Demon's Souls is one of my favourite games of all time, along with Shadow of the Colossus."

"Do you have a link to that video dude? That'd be sweet.

I am glad people agree with the general tone of the article. Thanks guys."

"The only reason I criticize you is because you put the blame on video game journalists for making this a problem. Most of us have come to terms with the fact that review scores mean little and I think it hypocritical of you to say that journalists that give the same scores to titles that do the same things are the problem. By your own admission, everything in your article above is repeating what has been said. I just don't think its fair to lump the blame on video game media, in fact, I think that is quie ridiculous."

"Not sure what your core argument is. At first it seems as if you are trying to justify that games are not an artform because of the homogenization of AAA, but towards the middle your argument you seem to fixate on the E3 games that are moving further away from their original premise without relating that to video games as an art form. You also refer to Hollywood movies a lot and I think it is safe to say that the latest Fast and Furious is rarely referred to as artistic. It's just a blockbuster that gets people to sit in a theater. It's the same with AAA games.

The medium can be used for artistic purposes if the creator deems it necessary. However, most of the time, the creator deems money more necessary. If we look at the indie darlings of video games and compare them to the more artistic films, than we see a similar pattern. Lower box office takings, cult followings, smaller budgets. What you are arguing here has been said a thousand times on a thousand sites and its not an issue that is likely to die off as long as the AAA titles make money.

However, I think you missed an opportunity to discuss the artistic merit of action blockbusters here and opted to go the traditional lack-of-innovation-frustrates-me route."
