Mobcast Episode 26

Bitmobâ€™s Horror Week kicks off with an all-horror Mobcast. Dan Hsu is joined by Segaâ€™s Ethan Einhorn, and horror-expert and gamer, Raychul Moore. The podcast got off to a terrifying start when technical difficulties/ghouls killed off Konamiâ€™s Tomm Hulett, but the surviving group bravely decided to stick together and honor their fallen podcaster.

The trio discuss the doâ€™s and donâ€™ts of making survival horror games, debate what horror movie franchise would make the best video game, ponder the effect that â€œhelplessnessâ€ has on a successful survivor-horror experience, share the lessons theyâ€™ve learned from horror games and movies, and reveal their scariest moments while playing horror games.

It's too bad that Tim couldn't make it - the podcast seems a little tame/quiet with a cast of three. Nonetheless, the discussion about helplessness interested me quite a bit, mostly because I think that it's not only a good survival horror mechanic but also a good game mechanic. The idea of ditching fight-or-flight and instead having to realize the severity of particular situation is pretty effective no matter what the situation.

Talk about pushing the moral yardstick with a Hostel-esque dungeon master game. I would be really interested in that, as well as the opinions and experiences of those who played it.

I was hesitant about listening to a podcast dedicated to a genre I have little interest, but this was an interesting discussion.

Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, our Skype call-in thing was a disaster. It worked before on tests -- we think it was a firewall issue on Tim's end because he was recording from work. :(

I know exactly what Hsu is talking about in BioShock. It was the Dentist's office and the room filled up with a haze and I just stood there and when it cleared up there is the dentist. Really freaked me out and the stranger thing is that I was just talking about it when I was asking people from a site I got to what their favorite horror movies/games/books was and one person said BioShock.

But for me a game was Silent Hill 2. While it did have some scare moments what did it for me was the tension it created. I can only name a handful of other games that even come close to giving me that same feeling.

just listened to this, but WTF is up with your girlfriend dropping huge spoilers about Uncharted 2 outta nowhere without any warning near the end of the podcast....is she retarded?
