Arcade Flyers: Welcome to Frightfearland

While I primarily use retro arcade games for this feature, I couldn't pass up a chance to share this new (and completely bizarre) Taito cabinet.

Meet Frightfearland, a two-player shooter set in a spooky carnival.

Frightmareland

The game launched in Japan earlier this year and Global VR obtained the US publishing license, so you could eventually encounter one of these machines in the wild...though that'll probably be in a soiled and forgotten corner of a movie theater.

I've included a gameplay video after the jump. While the character models are rather flat and uninspired, Frightfearland looks good in motion. Oh, and do be careful of the montage of creepy clown pictures before the actual footage starts.

I remember playing a demonic-carnival themed light-gun shooter at the liquor store near my friend's house back in the late 90s. That game was hard as shit!

It was likely CarnEvil. I was trying to find a flyer for it for comparison.

Yeah, CarnEvil! Seriously gave me nightmares. I remember it had the one bizarre feature of, rather than inputting your initials for high scores, having you sign you name with the gun.

I love how the first part of the video makes it look like an old-school antique. Then the gameplay hit me with all the awesome staples of light-gun entertainment. It's as if it combines the best of both worlds.

I'm not entirely sure I'm sold on this one.  I mean, I can understand it's meant to be a reskin for Alien: Extermination, but the whole carnival thing has already been done (CarnEvil).
