Four us of struggled through the final Bowser level nearly 20 times before that one glorious moment when it all clicked: We stomped, bubbled, and leapt blindly as one. It was magical. On more than one occasion the last player alive would appear to fall to a fiery doom, only to pop another player's bubble as they fell. We hit upon the perfect combination of luck, skill, and teamwork, and we were unstoppable. When we finally stomped the switch that sealed Bowser's fate, I literally fell out of my chair in exhilaration.

That's why we play video games -- we want to capture those moments of pure fun. And NSMBW had more of those than any other game I played this year.

Wow Brett, your crew has skillz. Four players beating the final level is quite a feat.

New Super Mario Bros. is brilliant because of its has broad appeal.

Case in point: My gay friend, who probably plays video games for a total of one hour a year, was hooked on NSMB. He and I had multiple 3-4 hour play sessions, and we beat the game in about a week. My non-gaming girlfriend even got in on the action, though she was more of a hindrance than a help (though I would never tell her that).

The appeal of NSMB is simple: It has great, accessible gameplay, inventive level design, recognizable characters, and a lot of charm. NSMB is definitely on my Top Game of 2009 list.

@Nick: Mario has always been about broad appeal. That's why it's the most successful game franchise out there.

All this talk of Mario makes me want to play it right now.
