When going for total completion in games isn't crazy

Sometimes, seeing the credits roll isn't enough.

In a fit of impulsiveness, I decided to allot the extra time bestowed upon me by the holidays and complete a task normally outside my realm of feasibility: attaining 100 percent completion in Red Dead Redemption. (RDR)

No, I didn't harbor some misguided aspiration of becoming a completionist. RDR simply contained that perfect mixture of intrigue and tangible reward that sustained my interest until every weapon was purchased, outfit unlocked, and gang hideout cleared. And that got me thinking on the kinds of games that would warrant a push for that lofty goal of total victory...not to mention the gratuitous bragging rights to boot.

Red Dead Redemption

It's easy to distinguish the worthwhile games to fully exhaust over the painfully tedious ones. Chrono Trigger rewarded players with tantalizingly powerful loot on full completion, including the Rainbow Sword (which is actually far more deadly than it sounds). RDR's unlocks featured a slick Bureau uniform that grants one total immunity to the law.

But what about those games that are a such a chore to fully finish? Gears of War capitalizes on riveting shootouts and fully fleshed-out characters (OK, maybe not the second one), but falters in providing an incentive to going after those elusive COG tags. And don't even get me started on those blasted Skulltulas from The Legend of Zelda.

Which games have you felt supremely satisfied to fully complete? Add your thoughts in the comments section below!

I was considering going for 100% completion of Final Fantasy 7, but then got sidetracked by world of warcraft... And to say that I am going for 100% completion of that game is like saying that I am one day going to aquire all the knowledge of the universe.

I used to try to 100% all the games I enjoyed. Of course, real life began to get in the way.

I am proud to admit, though, that I did 100% Twilight Princess.

I can't really say there are any, mostly because I've never really considered 100% completion really finishing a game. Love the GTA series, but I have no interest in hunting pigeons or chasing hidden packages. Same thing with Final Fantasy, Assassin's Creed, or Mass Effect. And though I haven't played Red Dead yet, I know of some of the stuff required for 100% and I just don't care. Guess from my end, it's never really been part of why I play.

Maybe all of the Zelda titles because of how the puzzles taunted me in my sleep. Also, Megaman Zero 3 & 4. But the most i would say is Pac-Man 2: The New Adventures for SNES loll. too awesome, had no save feat. had to write down all of the passcodes for the levels

The 1st Megaman X game rewarded you with the ability to toss Hadokens that destroyed anything (except Sigma's final form) once you've collected all the upgrades. You even get to see Dr. Light in a gi as he presents you new weapon. The sequal would later give you a Shoryuken, but afterwards it's some lame gold armor.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced and FFTA2 are two other games that I would dedicate my time to, but I just got Dragon Quest IX for Christmas. Oh well :)

I have not finished many games 100%. Usually I just go through the main campaign, but I did get the Platinum trophy in Bioshock , the only one I have on Playstation 3. It took me three playthroughs to get the platinum, thanks to what I call a glitchy file save.

One of my 2011 resolutions is to complete the games I play completely. That should be a feat!

Excellent idea for an article, but I really wish you'd have gone deeper and properly explored the idea of total completion. Would've made for an interesting read.

I'm working on 100% in Assassin's Creed 2, everything has been find until I realized that there are 100 of those damn feathers and I have only 12.

The only game I remember 100-percenting is Jet Set Radio: Future. I usually lose interest in games before I get that far.

I had to 100 % Borderlands and Zombie island as that was the best game I have truly played in awhile
