Capcom-troversy

This is more of a rant if anything, but the current state of Capcom makes me question their marketing choices lately. Sifting through my SNES collection, I've noticed that a strong majority of the games I own are developed or published by the Osaka based company.

With the current state of the video game industry leaning towards digital distribution, it makes me wonder why Capcom abuses the system of downloadable content. Oftentimes, exploiters have found a way to unlock content within the disc itself; and by word-of-mouth, fans have turned their backs on Capcom.

In Capcom's defense, Yoshinori Ono, the executive producer stated that the reason for the on-disc DLC was to discourage big downloads and to make compatibility during online matches more streamlined.

But that doesn't explain the fact that over 12 characters are sitting comfortably within the confines of my disc.

I do understand the fact that adding characters to a roster typically requires technical fixes and balancing issues between characters, but it just seems unfair to me as a customer and long time fan of the company. I feel cheated out of my money. Not only do I have to pay 60 dollars for a retail copy, but I'd have to fork over more to get costumes and characters. Of course, I can opt out of purchasing Ken's stupid alternate cowboy costume.

What happened to the days of simply unlocking a character by doing some sort of daunting task? If Capcom has been doing this since Street Fighter IV, then why hasn't Capcom paid attention to the cries of their fans? Instead, they continue to twist our wrists and demand an entrance fee for their complete game. It's a passive-aggressive take on DLC, and I think I've had enough of it. There's a fine-line between bonus content and "paid patches."

Looks like I'll never defeat Sheng Long to stand a chance.

I know how you feel. I watch what companies like Capcom, THQ, and EA do with their games, and I just become speechless when I hear people are actually looking forward to when everything goes digital. I say to them "Wait a minute, wait a minute. You hate how almost every publisher out there used manipulative and downright dirty tactics to get money, yet you can't wait to give up your ability to actually own the game you buy? You can't wait to loose the only power you have over them, and give them all of the power instead?"

I just don't get it. Why sacrifice the little power we have over them for the sake of downloading a game from your couch? These publishers like Capcom will stop at nothing to squueze every little ounce of money out of a gamer. The other thing I don't understand is, well, why? They have to be looking at the numbers out there. Social gaming is taking a nosedive. Zynga is flopping around like a healf dead fish. Console gaming has come crashing down. Things aren't looking too bright.

When I ask gamer friends why they have stopped gaming, they tell me it is because of money. They say that even free to play games are too expensive. And it is true. Every little dirty thing these publishers can do to try and bleed more dollars out of our wallets, they will do. Even if they are totally alienating paid customers who are so frustrated they are turning their backs on the industry.

On-Disk DLC

Online Passes

Micro-Transactions in paid games

Manipulative DLC practices

Overpriced DLC

The cost of digital games being more than the cost of the real thing at a retail store

Shorter and shorter games, while the price stays the same

The price of downloadable games continuing to creep upwards

Subscriptions, even for games that have no right asking for one, Like Battlefield 3

Pre-Order bonuses that guarantee you won't get the full experience since every store has different bonuses

Sequel after sequel after sequel gets shoved onto store shelves, while original content on shelves is almost nowhere to be seen

This industry is an ugly place, and they are loosing gamers so qucikly. You'd think they'd stop and think for a second, but they don't. The continue to push and push and push. My question to them would be this. Where do you think all this money is coming from? When you've officially bled dry the gamers willing to ride along on your shit train, and everyone else has left from frustration, what are you going to do then? Beg us to come back? I think Nintendo is going to learn that lesson the hard way when the Wii U launches.

Gone are the days where a gamer would get a reward (ie unlocks) for actually doing something in the game. But then people have to understand these companies are only out to make money and nothing else.

If fans are really that upset then they should not buy either the game or the DLC. But enough people do to justify this action by Capcom or by anyone else.
