Trying to keep up with all of the downloadable games and content that's out there these days is enough to make a person cry. But cry no more, because Download Lowdown is here to help. I'll sift through the good, the bad, and the weird to help you get the most from your game system of choice without leaving your house.
Today I flex my brain muscle with a little 1 vs 100 on Xbox Live. Oh wait, the brain isn’t a muscle? Hopefully I don’t get asked any anatomy questions!
Game: 1 vs 100
System:Â Xbox 360
Price:Â Free (ad supported)
The Lowdown: 1 vs 100 is a free online quiz show playable on Xbox Live. Based on the TV show of the same name, it pits a single player, the “One†against a group of 100, known as the “Mob.†The two compete directly against each other by answering general trivia questions. If someone in the mob gets a question wrong, that person is eliminated. If the One gets a question wrong, the round is over and the Mob wins.
If you aren’t the One, and you’re not in the Mob, you play along as a member of the audience. There’s more to it, but it’s hard as hell to summarize the way a trivia game is played. If you really want to know more, read the official show FAQ and/or watch the video below.
Why is this game cool? I’m glad you asked. First off, it’s free. There are some commercials run every few minutes, but they’re not particularly intrusive (a little more variety would be nice, though). Another reason is that on Tuesday and Friday nights it’s hosted by an honest-to-goodness live host. He comments on the action at hand, answers emails and texts, and basically makes the whole two-hour show (you can come and go as you please) feel like real, live game show. The game also makes use of 360 avatars during play.  it’s entertaining to see the many ways in which people have customized their online persona. Oh, and you can dance, too.
Did I mention that there are prizes? If the One decides to walk away before answering a question incorrectly, he/she walks away with Microsoft Points. If the Mob outlasts the One, then they split the Microsoft Points amongst the surviving mob members. Even the crowd can win some cool stuff. Last Friday, Microsoft gave away a copy of Portal to the top-three scorers from each round. You’ve got to be pretty darn good to win a prize out of 28,000 people, but it’s fun to try.
Even after four paragraphs, I still don’t feel as though I’ve described the “fun†aspect of 1 vs 100 to you. It’s one of those games that you need to experience to appreciate. I had a buddy that was trying to get me to play for weeks, but it wasn’t until I finally gave the game a shot that I really “got†what all his fuss was about.
Give 1 vs 100 a look if you have even the slightest interest in game shows, or you’re looking for a fun game to share with your non-gamer significant other.
What GameFaqs says:
NicAgent just got smacked all up in his face with some knowledge: “Wow, so Alaska has the most active volcanoes of any US state? If you were playing 1 v 100 Geography last night between 23:00 and 23:30 Eastern time, you were probably stunned (as was I) when you found out Hawaii was not the correct answer to this question (the third choice being California).â€W- is going to spend much of their life feeling dumb if this post is any indication:  “These game makes me feel dumb.â€

lXxSHAD0WxXl doesn’t strike me as the most credible of sources. Maybe it’s the idiotic name? Anyway, the dude is angry: “has anyone seen this turd? his gamertag is X Mr Pibbles X. if you see him, report him for cheating. hes jumping into other countries' extended play games and taking up mob and the one positions all the time. hes forbidding others from having a chance at being in the mob or being the one and hes doing it over and over and over. hes destroying people's chances of winning prizes and he needs to be kicked off live.â€
Assembler114 started a thread about calling into the game that will lower your IQ a point for every second you spend reading it. Don’t believe me? Go look: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/genmessage.php?board=950909&topic=51041895
