E3 2011: Best of Activision -- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

What is it?

The 2011 edition of Call of Duty features the same Hollywood-style, action-packed gameplay we've become very familiar with. It does have a new Spec Ops mode, though....

Why is it cool?

The new Spec Ops co-op takes a page from everyone's-doing-it Horde mode. Instead of the objective-based missions from Modern Warfare 2, now you and another player (yes, it's still just 2P) must survive against waves of A.I. enemies for as long as possible.

In this version, however, the more kills you get, the more cash you accumulate to buy better hardware. You start off with an FN57 pistol, and if you don't feel like dirtying your hands to pick up the guns of your fallen foes, you can go to the weapons station to buy submachine guns, assault rifles, machine guns, more ammo, and even upgrades like red dot sights.

Other "stores" let you buy defensive gear like juggernaut armor or sentry guns; equipment like claymores, C4, or various grenades; or air drops like predator missiles or A.I. squadmates (some even equipped with riot shields).

The moment we will get extra excited

With the above features plus boss fights (juggernauts, gunships, etc.), this Spec Ops is definitely next-level survival mode, but oddly enough, it's awfully similar to Gears of War 3's Horde 2.0. (Unless one developer has an inside spy at the other, this is probably coincidence, as both parties debuted their respective feature sets at roughly the same time.)

During E3, I kept prying to see if Modern Warfare 3 will see MW2's style of Spec Ops, with varied missions, sometimes with asymmetrical play (one person's an AC-130 gunner-in-the-sky while the other's fighting on the ground, for example). No one would confirm anything, but the general vibe I got was that Activision's not done announcing what else is coming this fall for this mode....

That's great news!  I played a ton of Spec Ops on MW2, and so I was curious what they would do with it this time around.  Might be the only reason I pick up this title...

I love horde modes, but I do hope they vary up the gameplay.  The blackhawk Spec-Op mission was fantastic.

Totally agree. I LOVE Spec Ops on MW2 and hope they will bring back those mission styles. It was great going through those with a friend, seeing something new each round. Snipers, breach, AC-130, helicopter gunner, stealth, etc. So awesome.

So underrated, too!

You're forgetting the juggernaut Spec Op mission in the shanty town in Brazil... High Explosive is the name of the map.  Played that so many times and so many different ways... it was a combination of rewarding, frustrating, and exhilarating every single time!

Yep, just as I got Black Ops for zombies, I will be getting MW3 with the sole reason being Spec Ops.  It better be good!

Spec Ops was definitely my favorite part of Modern Warfare 2!

I normally snicker at the overly-serious tone of the Modern Warfare games, but dang the trailer alone got me PUMPED.

Awesome - the majority of writers/podcasters I follow have seemed really underwhelmed by MW3. While the series isn't a personal favorite, I did enjoy the first 2 MW games. Kinda nice to see something positive...but after this one, don't they have to do something even a lttle bit different?

I think so. I mean, the campaign looks action-packed enough, but you almost know what to expect now. But I hope they add something new like they have the last few games to really surprise everyone:

World at War: Nazi zombies

Modern Warfare 2: Spec Ops

Black Ops: Wager matches

Modern Warfare 3: Not sure yet, but I hope it's not just this survival-mode Spec Ops. It's fun, but I like the mission/objective-style Spec Ops of MW2 better.
