E3 2011: Best of Sony -- Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception

What is it?

Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception follows the treasure hunting Nathan Drake as he searches for a legendary lost city called Iram of the Pillars, located somewhere in an Arabian desert. His newest adventure has him escaping burning chateaus, sinking ships, and chasing after airplanes. And if what I was shown were any indication, this will be Nate’s darkest and most personal story yet.

Why is it cool?

Because it’s Un-freaking-charted! If you played Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (and I would seriously question your status as a gamer if you haven’t), then you know that this series is famous for over-the-top action set-pieces, the best voice acting in the medium, and realistic, dynamic animations. Uncharted 3 doesn’t need to reinvent the series; it merely has to outdo its predecessor.

Easier said than done, since many considered Uncharted 2 to be one of the most exciting action games ever made, but my jaw was on the floor during the entirety of developer Naughty Dog's demo for the anticipated sequel.

One of the best moments involved Nate running after a cargo plane as it sped down a runway. Right when it seemed it would be impossible for Nate to catch the plane before it took off, Elena, his love interest from the previous games, shows up in a speeding jeep. Soon, Nate is standing on top of the vehicle, directing Elena to go left or right, until he jumps onto a landing gear moments before the plane goes airborne. This one level puts most modern action films to shame in terms of sheer excitement...let alone other games that can’t hope to be half as exhilarating.

The moment I actually wished I owned a 3D television

As much as I enjoy my 3DS, I was never in a hurry to buy a 3D television set so that I could play some PlayStation 3 games with expensive glasses on. But the short 3D trailer of Uncharted 3 shown in Sony’s theater was very impressive. It’s clear that Naughty Dog has designed many moments of the game with 3D in mind, with objects -- usually quickly followed by Nate -- often flying towards the screen.

More of us would have played Uncharted but it's on that crappy Sony system... Do people who could care less about this Blu-ray fad really own that system?

Great review tho btw.. if I had an extra $400 to spend on a mostly worthless system I would be all over it!

I personally own "that crappy Sony system" so that I can play AAA titles like Uncharted.  Each system has it's strengths and weaknesses, and I don't think anyone here on Bitmob wants to start a flame-war here, Mark.  Calling the PS3 worthless doesn't add anything to the conversation about Uncharted 3.

Oh I was just kidding lol. I dont see the use in spending $400 or so on a system that has 3 or 4 exclusive games that are worth it but it's a personal preference thing...

So you only buy Nintendo systems?

If you're still thinking of paying $400 for a PS3, I've got a bridge in Brooklyn you'll be interested in.

Up until the Wii heck yes! I don't really fit into the toddler/elderly demo the big 'N' appeals to now but before Wii back when Nintendo made real games I was all over everything they did. Like I said I was joking about the PS3 I loved the first 2 PlayStations I just don't see any reason at all to spend all that money on a system with just a couple of games you can't get anywhere else...but that's just me. I'm also a heavy duty PC gamer so the 2 or 3 games (not counting Little Big Planet...I'll always wish I could have played that) that are worth playing on the PS3 and even less appealing because there are already comparable (if not better) games on the PC.

Oh, I get that you were joking, but exclusive IPs are becoming a thing of the past, or rare as it were. And as Rob points out, the PS3 won't run you $400, nor will the 360 (unless you purchase some sort of bundle).

So essentially what you're saying is that you don't play console games, period. An argument could be made that there's not enough exclusive IPs between the PS3 and 360 to warrant the purchase of both, but consoles in general have plenty of exclusives.

And I totally agree about Nintendo (time will tell if the Wii U targets an older demographic). I don't begrudge their business decisions, but they clearly abandoned me, and those like me, and I won't reward that. That said, I think you're missing out on a lot of great experiences by not playing PS3 or 360.

No not true I love console games I own an Xbox so I see no need to own a PS3. as far as $400 goes you guys should know better by now that after you buy an extra controller u need and at least one game and tax the total price will easily exceed the $400 mark.

"...if I had an extra $400 to spend on a mostly worthless system" -- your words, not mine.

But come on, Mo. No need for this trolling.

Not trolling... more voicing frustration at the lack of support I feel Sony has given the PS3. It's like the red-headed stepchild of the PlayStation family. But I understand that I state my feelings about games a little harshly for some people to digest :p

Uncharted 1-3, Heavy Rain, Resistance 1-3, LittleBigPlanet 1 & 2, Infamous 1 & 2, Yakuza 3 & 4, God of War III, Killzone 2 & 3...and that's just off the top of my head. Just sayin...there's more than 3 or 4 exclusive IPs for the PS3.
