Fun, yet boring.
Those three words are short enough to sum up the over all jibe I was left with upon exiting Sony's event that outlined the future of their company. In short, Sony is in trouble. Their credit approval is dropping, the PS3 has lost its grip overseas where the console once supreme and the Vita has arguably been a bust thus far.
The company has a lot cut out for them, but since when have they seen else wise? Sony always like to fight fire with fire it seems, they just can't seem to find the one weakness they need to find to emerge a victor.
Acting as the closure for the first day of E3, Sony's jam-packed conference provided a rather impressive outlook for the PS3 and all of its many counter parts. Some of the games looked good, some gorgeous, but some looked bad. The obvious weak link that seemingly dragged the event down was the new Wonderbook mechanism for the PlayStation 3 that is supposed to change the way we read our books.
But to be frank, Sony is a long way off if there goal remains as hefty as they say. The technology looked slow and unresponsive at times, and overall, the concept just looked plain boring... Why I would ever waste the money to go and buy a Wonderbook and one of the device's books I don't know, and knowing Sony, the thing won't be cheap either.
Plus, the idea squinting to read the little tidbits of text here and there on my TV screen just don't appeal to me. And to think of sitting down and reading an entire book on the device horrifies me.
The book shown off was the "Book of Spells" written by J.K. Rowling, famed author of the Harry Potter series. Players get to interact with the magical environment the virtual book on your TV screen provides and have to practice and read off multiple different spells while they train to become a wizard.
The disappointing part was simply the fact that most, if not all the spells were just plain dumb. Draw a Z to cast a pathetic fireball at the paper dragon. No thanks. Even the intended audience, children, will probably be bored with this concept and will probably have a difficult time controlling the game since even the adults who took the stage to demonstrate were fumbling with the game's jiffy controls.
The show wasn't all that bad however and what had probably generated the most buzz from the event was the system's new IP game titled "Beyond: Two Souls," under development by Quantic Dream. Graphically, the game looks amazing and the nail-biting demo laid down the groundwork for what looks to be an amazing game. You are a young girl named Jodie Holmes, whose voice is to be portrayed by Hollywood actress Ellen Page.
The new interactive drama follows Jodie over a course of 15 years, showing how her connection with a powerful, paranormal creature shapes her life as she transitions from a mere child to a young adult.
Beyond wasn't the only new exciting IP at the conference however, as Naughty Dog introduced their new game, The Last of Us, which will follow characters Joel and Ellie through an post-apocalyptic America. The demo showed off at the event had Joel and Ellie brutally battling it out against a band of survivors from the virus outbreak looting through a hotel. The way Naughty Dog managed to seamlessly move between gameplay and cinematics cut-scenes was breathtaking to say the very least, self-propelling the game further up my anticipated games list.
For the Vita, Sony showed off two new exclusives coming to the handheld, which includes Call of Duty Black Ops 2: Declassified, which is said to feature full online multiplayer connectivity, and Assassin;s Creed 3: Liberation, which will feature for the first time a female assassin as the hero for the game's series. And thanks to the Ubisoft-PlayStation partnership, Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation will also arrive with a white PS Vita bundle option when it ships later this year in October.
Also shown off was Assassin's Creed 3 itself for the PS3, utilizing a live demo on stage to show off the game's massive high seas battles by ship. Players will be able to commandeer their very own ship which they can board to set sail to go out and either explore the game world or even use to fight off pirates and other British and colonial war ships.
Outside of gaming, Sony introduced an interesting new expansion of the company, PlayStation Mobile, as they begin their push into the mobile phone market. Sony plans to bring the world of gaming to smartphones, starting with HTC devices first. Perhaps this is Sony;s attempt to enable more universal cross play similar to what other companies such as Microsoft are now going offer with Smart Glass. Or maybe games themselves will begin to arrive on our phones in the near future. Only time will what Sony has in store for us.
Sony had a lot to offer us at E3 2012 and all of their hard work really showed off. With two new exciting IPs inbound for the PS3 and with Call of Duty and Assassin's Creed set to join the Vita's portfolio, a major turn for the better may be in the works for the waning company. But with silly new technology such as the Wonderbook, one has to wonder if Sony is really spending their rather limited profit as of late wisely?
