Bust-A-Move Universe

Tired of gyroscoping around and shooting at your roommate's face in the Face Raiders pack-in "game" that came with your brand-new 3DS? Here’s an idea: Stick a free game in the system instead.

To be precise, stick in a free copy of Bust-a-Move Universe, the latest in the long-running series of bubble-popping puzzle games. Square Enix has kindly agreed to give two lucky Bitmobbers the game in exchange for answering this question in the comments:

What’s your favorite memory from a past Bust-a-Move title?

Mine is the the time I pulled off a last-second ricochet shot that cleared the entire board on an arcade machine at the local mini-golf course. Sadly, the game was tucked in the back corner of the arcade, and no one else witnessed my feat of awesomeness.

I’ll pick the winners at random at 5 p.m. PST on Thursday, April 7, so make sure you comment before then. Good luck!

I LOVE Bubble Bobble and the Bust a Move series!  the only problem is I'm color blind so it's a tad more difficult for me.  Fondest memory is pretty much many hours of staring at the screen trying to guess if my next move is going to work or not.

My favorite memory is of playing this game while my wife was watching, whom scoffed at the saccharine sweet dinosaurs and chirpy sound effects.  She didn't come to bed 'til 1 a.m. because she was utterly hooked on the puzzle game play.

I remember introducing it to my girlfriend in college. My friend and I were playing some heated two-player versus Bust-A-Move on Dreamcast. I asked my girlfriend if she wanted to play, and she seemed interested in the fun we were having. I gave her some basic instructions and the massacre began. One after another the rest of us were defeated. She quickly tired of beating us mercilessly and relinquished the controller. That girl was good at puzzle games.

She was a demon at Meteos.

My first experience with Bust-A-Move/Puzzle Bobble was during my childhood at a skate rink in Lawton, OK. Back then, I worshipped the arcades, with BAM being no exception. When I played it, I tried figuring out what I was supposed to do to get all the flashy things to pop-up. I kept shooting the bubbles that built down and down to the bottom and "UH-OOOHHH!" said the little dinosaurs.

Now about 15 years later, I gave a visit to the magnificent Musee Mechanique of San Francisco's Boardwalk. There existed a Neo Geo cabinet featuring none other than you-know-who. So I popped a coin in to test my gaming skills after all these years. For the first round I fired a bubble of the same color to the top couple of bubbles and *POP* goes everything below and the memorable victory music plays! I realized then and there that this was the same round that I first tried and failed to finish.

Boy what years of experience really does for people.

Playing bust-a-move as a young child and learning how much fun puzzle games can be!

I showed one of the older iterations to my mother when I was in high school. She got a kick from the little "Yoshis." Once she started playing she was insanely good and beat me every time we played against each other. She was also unstoppable in Kirby's Avalanche with the little "marshmallow man." You should see how she gets when we hook up the GameCube for Monkey Ball... Cracks her up every time to see those monkeys.

I remember begging my mom to take me to pizza hut because they had an arcade cabinet in the corner with bust-a-move on it. Many quarters were spent trying to match those suckers up

Oh jeez, I remember staying up all night with my sisters, taking turns play Bust-A-Move on the N64, they always beat me though, so the awesomeness is slightly mitigated.

My best Bust-A-Move memory would be when I finally started to 'get' how the combos worked, piling junk in front of bubbles then scoring when the extras were matching with sets elsewhere. I think it had something to do with watching the highest level computer work its magic.

I used to be a homeless miscreant. It was difficult to find ways to stay warm and occupied at night, but I was good enough at the original Bust-A-Move that I could easily play for half an hour on one quarter. I used to get quarters by collecting small change, then feeding it into a magic soda machine near the arcade that would turn two dimes and a nickel into a quarter if you hit the coin return. I also had a nice racket going where I'd get drunk cowboys to pay me to play Dance Dance Revolution, but that's neither here nor there.

Back in community college there was both a Puzzle Bobble and Bust-a-Move arcade cabinet on campus (same game, different localizations). I spent most of my spare time between class on one of these, and it was a great feeling to master the system (gotta knock down 17 bubbles at once for the max score bonus of 1310720, of course). It was always fun to have someone walk by and make a comment about how I look like I'm in a lot of trouble, then suddenly all the bubbles fall off the screen and huge numbers appear. In the end, I filled up the high scores list on both machines. The only thing better is when someone was silly enough to challenge me in vs mode.

I did have a buddy who was about as good, though. We played the Saturn version of Bust-a-Move 2X mostly. After one extended session, we learned how to play the main theme on saxophone and glockenspiel. The 2nd one has some great catchy ditties.

After I finally got my hands on my very own Neo Geo Pocket Color I did nothing but play Metal Slug for weeks on end non stop. Eventually I had beat the game every which way and was looking for something new. A trip down to the local game store revealed that they really weren't supporting the Neo Geo Pocket Color, and they only had one game on the shelf, a used game. I did not like buying used, but I was out of options.

I saw it was Bust-A-Move, which was a game I never played before and looked like some kiddie garbage. I bought it anyway and threw it in expecting to be bored out of my mind. Instead, I played it for a month non stop. I loved it's addicting gameplay and easy on the eyes graphics. I can still remember hiding it under my desk in school while desperately trying to follow through on the "Just one more level" promise I had made myself 20 levels ago.

Playing Bust-A-Move in the arcades is the most rememberable arcade game that I can remember. The consent tension of the ceiling collapsing on me. Trying oh so hard from keeping the little dinos inevitable demise away. Also it was so colorful.
