Games you must buy in Amazon's handheld sale

Amazon just put 150 PSP, DS, and 3DS games on sale for their Summer Road Trip Handheld Gaming Event. While most of what they've discounted isn't worth the shipping cost, a few hard-to-find gems slipped into the list.

Unfortunately, I cannot recommend buying any of the available 3DS titles unless you missed out on getting discounted launch games back in April, but below you'll find my picks for the top games from the DS and PSP listings.

DS

Professor Layton

1. Professor Layton and the Curious Village
List Price: 29.99
New Price: 13.99
You Save: 16.00

The Professor Layton series proves that puzzle-based gameplay can have a rich story and beautiful world built around it. Level 5 works their magic as they seamlessly tie together that simple puzzling premise with a haunting murder mystery and a quirky, unforgettable setting.

2. Dragon Quest 5
List Price:
39.99
New: 19.99
You Save: 20.00

Good luck finding a copy of Dragon Quest 5 for either of those prices after this sale. For some reason this is DQ game that is the hardest to come by. Used copies on eBay go for around $40-50! Even if you have only a passing interest in the franchise, this price is simply too good to ignore.

3. The World Ends With You
List Price:
19.99
New: 14.99
You Save: 5.00

I don't mean to overpopulate this list with role-playing games, but there are just so many on the DS!The World Ends With You turns RPG mechanics on their ear as it incorporates street fashion and rhythm patterns into its gameplay. That might sound strange at first, but the final product is curiously addictive.

4. Dragon Quest 9
List Price:
34.99
New: 18.00
You Save: 16.99

OK, I completely failed at keeping RPGs out of this list. Technically, this game isn't part of the official summer sale, but it's just under 50 percent off like the rest of the Dragon Quest DS lineup. DQ9 is arguably the best RPG of 2010 and is an intriguing departure from its predecessors.

Total DS haul
List Price: 124.96
New: 66.97
Savings: 57.99

PSP

1. Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together
List Price: 19.99
New: 14.99
You Save: 5.00

This remake gives one of the most challenging strategy-RPGs a fresh face. This retranslated and restructured version maintains all the charm and challenge of the original but streamlines the combat and removes many of the outdated leveling mechanics.

2. Ys Seven
List Price:
19.99
New: 14.99
You Save: 5.00

The Ys series is the precursor for modern action RPGs. This game breathes new life into the franchise and is quite possibly the best-looking PSP title that isn't God of War-related. The only problem is that it's over too quickly. It's definitely worth less than half its launch price, though.

3: Final Fantasy 4 the Complete Collection
List Price:
29.99
New: 19.99
You Save: 10.00

While you can buy Final Fantasy 4 on both DS and PSP,this collection includes a remastered version of the After Years (a FF4 sequel originally made for mobile phones and later ported to WiiWare). This is the definitive edition for anyone hoping to play both games in order.

Total PSP Haul
List Price:
69.97
New: 49.97
Savings: 20.00

Total for both DS and PSP games
List Price: 194.93
New: 116.94
Savings: 77.99

The World Ends With You is the secret best game ever.

I hate to say it, but I really loved playing that game. It beats out FF13 as one of my favorite modern-day JRPGs.

...I think I've mentioned this before, but someone needs to make an HD version of this game. Somehow. The stylus action still blows my mind.
