Madden Ultimate Team: Gotta Catch'em All!

When I used to do the From the Bleachers podcast at GameSpot, one of the topics that frequently came up was how awesome it would be if EA built a game mode around Madden Cards. Brian, Shanker, and I were all pretty obsessed with the idea, which is why I’m so excited about Madden Ultimate Team (MUT), which will be released this January.

MUT is a free downloadable add-on to Madden NFL 10, so you’ll need a copy of the game if you want to build your own team using virtual trading cards.

Like any good card-based game, you begin with a starter deck. And, like any good card-based game, the cards in the starter deck pretty much suck.

You’ll earn coins based on your performance on the field. You can also use real-world currency to purchase coins, which can then be used to buy new packs.

While everyone has access to the same cards, it’s certainly much easier/faster to build a great team if you’re willing to shell out some cash. Since that team can then be taken online, I think it’s a bit unfair, but hey, at least this add-on is free. I can’t gripe too much, right?

The more-expensive silver and gold packs have much better players than the bronze. Obviously.

Legendary cards are for players that are currently in the league, but instead of them being based on this season, they’re from one of the players’ best seasons: Favre with the Packers, T.O. with the Niners...

There are cards for coaches as well. Notice the “chemistry” rating on the side. You get a ratings boost for putting together players that play together in the NFL, and even for players that went to the same college.

If you’re a fan of big-ass scoreboards, you’ll be pleased as punch when you earn this card.

Want to switch your ugly Lions jersey for an ugly Colts jersey? You can do that. But really, you should probably go with something classy like the Bears’ uniform.

If you’re looking to unload some cards, or you want to find a specific player’s card, you can buy and sell your cards in an online auction format (virtual currency only -- no real cash here).

EA will also release special “rare” cards from time to time. I was shown a platinum Tom Brady card at the game's unveiling. These cards will be limited in number, and will certainly be hard to come by.

Full disclosure: I have done some consulting work for Natural Motion’s Backbreaker -- a football game that’s a direct competitor to Madden. I’m actually quite excited about MUT, so I don’t think my work on Backbreaker has influenced this preview in any way, but it's important you're aware of this potential conflict of interest.

Everyone know where Tom Brady played in college, right? University of Michigan, that's right! Hell ya.

So you can "play" your deck against someone else's deck? Or is this all about the collecting?

Speaking of Michigan, isn't Charles Woodson in Green Bay now?

@Juan: I believe so, but I don't really follow the NFL that much...

Yeah, you play your deck against another. Those games are played just like regular Madden. It's pretty cool.

Finally something that makes Madden really interesting again.
