I imagine a parade for Civilization 5 Day would look just like a generic world-history parade.
News Blips:
Maryland declares September 21, 2010 to be "Civilization 5 Day." Governor Martin O'Malley recently signed a proclamation that recognizes the achievements of Civilization-series creator Sid Meier and his studio Firaxis -- both located in Maryland. The date is to coincide with the launch of the game...which would be unfortunate if the publisher decides to delay the launch.
DC Comics is prepping collectible-coin sets based on the World of Warcraft series. The coins -- featuring characters from both the Horde and the Alliance -- are plated in 24-karat gold, sterling silver, and copper. They go on sale August 25. Just imagine, if Glenn Beck's vision of a financial apocalypse comes and we go back to the gold standard, you would be so cool using WOW gold coins as currency.
The Vietnamese government cracks down on online games. GamePolitics sums up several of the recent measures Vietnam's Minister of Information and Communications Le Doan Hop has recently called for in order to curb online gaming. They come as a result of alleged public outcry over video games' "negative influences on the youth." Some of the changes include restricting how Internet cafes operate, banning ads for online games, and limiting playtime to three hours for non-educational or cultural games. Politicians tend to be hypocritical though, so I bet it won't be long before someone catches one of these guys playing Starcraft 2 in an airport bathroom stall...or something.
Game developer Richard "Lord British" Garriott (Ultima series) wins a lawsuit against Korean developer NCSoft. Garriott, a former employee of NCSoft (after it bought up his company Destination Games) took a temporary leave of absence to participate in a space flight with Russian cosmonauts. NCSoft claimed he voluntarily left the company and forced him to sell his stock options. Garriott argued that this was a breach of his contract, and the court agreed, awarding him $28 million in damages. Fly to the International Space Station and win a multi-million dollar lawsuit -- such is the apparent life of a video game developer. [GamePro]
