I left out the parts of the Eurogamer interview where Grim Fandango designer Tim Schafer says some less-than-pleasant things about Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick, since it's probably nothing you didn't know already.
News Blips:
Acclaimed game designer Tim Schafer thinks comedy games will boom if and when the industry has a breakthrough hit. Speaking to Eurogamer, Schafer said that "the industry is imitative. A lot of people are chasing the last thing that was a big hit. What we need is a big-hit comedy game. As soon as we have one, everybody will follow, of course." Perhaps the path to success is a comedic first-person shooter set in the Middle East, Vietnam, or Nazi Germany...or maybe not.
Game Play -- video-game theater and performance art invades Brooklyn. All July, the Brick Theater is set to host video-game-themed events and performances that explore "the collision of technology, theater, performance art, and video-game culture by staging the collaborative work of performance and media artists across the digital spectrum." Some of the things they have planned include classic-video-game-to-theatre adaptations and a Chiptunes Dance Party. I'd say that I'm a little frightened, but actually, I'm considerably intrigued by all of this. Check out their website for more info.
Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi considers retiring from game development. Writing on his blog (via Kotaku), Sakaguchi said that the upcoming The Last Story -- from his own Mistwalker Studio -- "might be (his) last work." This is the part where I'm suppose to make some kind of Final Fantasy or Last Story joke, but I have too much respect for you all to go there.
Tell Namco Bandai which games you want to see available for download on the PlayStation Network. The company is currently taking suggestions for which PlayStation and TruboGrafx-16 games fans are interested in ports of -- though it isn't clear for which regions they'd be. Simply make a Twitter post containing the hashtag "#nbgi_archives" with your picks. I just hope that Internet trolls don't ruin this for the rest of us by creating a fake demand for something lame...like Pac-Man World. [Silconera]
