23 Things I Love About Video Games

I was going to write a column and bitch about some game-related stuff that was on my mind, when I got to thinking about how I too often focus on the negative side of gaming. Well, not today my friends; today I share with you some of the many things I love about video games and my job covering them.

I love…

The feeling of an old-school NES controller.

The sound of Sonic the Hedgehog losing his rings.

The memory of blowing a dude away in GoldenEye: Rogue Agent at E3 and then looking over and seeing that the “dude” was Shigeru Miyamoto.

Sitting on my horse and staring up at the stars on a clear night in Red Dead Redemption.

The fact that I still don’t know the letters and exact location of all of the buttons on the Wii Remote and Nunchuk.

That most game-related press events have meat on a stick.

Custom Xbox 360 faceplates.

That I was able to work with writer-turned-developer Greg Kasavin, if only for a short time.

The memory of playing Combat on the Atari 2600 with my sister and how we named the largest plane “Big Momma.”

When developers are willing to say interesting things on the record.

Helping friends pick out a game while on a limited budget.

Cheating at Duck Hunt by holding the gun two inches from the TV.

Making a fallen opponent dance in Killer Instinct.

Catching up with former GameSpot co-workers and remembering the “good ol’ days.”

Trying to bang all of the chicks in the Mass Effect series. Yep, I’m that guy.

When someone tells me that they enjoy my writing.

Andrew Hiscock’s unique articles for reminding me that it's OK to do something different.

Stumbling across a pinball machine that has a free game on it.

Playing Pac-Man Vs. with three friends.

That every press release is basically written in the same way.

Stealing jets and flying around the beautiful island of Panau in Just Cause 2.

Receiving a retail copy of a 360 game early and getting achievements before anyone else.

That I work for a site where I can write a list like this, and that our community will enjoy reading it.

Now it’s your turn. Share some of the things you love below, or, if you’re inspired, write an entire article and share the link with everyone in the comments.

Because that's my favorite number!

I look forward to the 46 things you hate about video games.  :)

You take that back, Bryan!

Greg: I'm an MJ fan. LeBron will never be THE #23 (that would hold true even if he hadn't changed his number)

Nothing odder, yet pleasing about going into a shop having the scanning sound be the Sonic ring. Took me a while to get use to that certain places, but I love it now.

And I won't lie. After finishing ME2, I shamelessly became that guy too.

The ridiculous conversion for Microsoft points. Playing Blaster Master with my cousin Sergio when we were like babies. DragonAge mother fucking Origins. The silly fact that I've purchased the same Virtual Console games on two different Wiis because I sold the first one due to lack of use. The Halo 1 LAN party on tube TVs. Being good at Counter Strike when I was like 15 and now sucking as bad as I do. Kicking my little brothers ass at Road Rash for the Genesis. Finding Radial Alchemic Drive at a Target and being the only dude I ever met that played it. Staying up all night with a friend nerdier than me trying to make something work in RPG Maker on PS2. The period of time when my excitement for Metal Gear Solid 2 was palpable. Zone of the Enders. Owning a PS2 on day 1. My best friend buying a Dreamcast on day 1. Learning how to play the first Rainbow Six from an exmilitary sniper. soul caliber 2 parties. shopping at GameStop before they became the evil empire. Taking time off work so I can sit in front of my computer during E3. Dan Sock in Retro Game Challenge. all of the great podcasts out there thanks to the journos. playing HOURS of the Tony Hawk Pro Skater demo at Sears one summer with my cousin Ricky. Rival Schools. Playing Kingdom Hearts and listening to Simon and Milo back in 2002. VMUs. Sierra adventure games. Full Throttle. I've got to stop, I could go on....

Thanks for the shout-out to custom Xbox 360 faceplates.

Wait... You can love? ;-) You are no where near as crabby as some other Gamespot editors. At least you are funny when you do it. You don't automatically hate sports sim games like most people who write here.
